Hi there
I haven't worked for a year either. I think I'm gonna start the whole application for incapacity benefit (I'm in the UK). Some people get it, some people don't - the main reason being they don't consider IBS "serious enough" to stop you working!! As someone else on this forum said, what are we meant to do? Bathroom tile inspector?!
I've only been able to leave my house 3 times in the last 4 weeks - working right now would be impossible. And I was no wallflower before the IBS hit - I had a marketing management job with a huge global company by the time I was 22 (last year), and travelled the world. I've paid plenty of taxes, and worked 15 hours a day for several years - and now some paper pushers tell me I don't deserve a little help..
Grrrrr....
It's horrible isn't it? I feel like I'm relying totally on my boyfriend. He's totally fine with it, but I hate it

oh wow sorry to hear how bad it is for you..but i know where you are coming from!.. yes it is horrible.. i've been depending on my mom, and i dont like to, i want to be able to help her instead of her helping me. i received papers from ssi for my work history (i dont have much of one!) and then they told me to call all my doctors to let them know that they will be sending paperwork for them to fill out so they can do it asap.. i've done all that so now i guess its a waiting thing, and alot of praying!

As far as work and disability is concerned, here in the U.S. the Social Security Admin. does not consider IbS disabling but becuase our disease is functional disorder, which totally alters your lifestyle and ADLs and can stop one from working, i suggest that a good lawyer can guide you from this point. My question is: 1) can heavy lifting and straining aggravate IBS 2)Does IBS get worse on its own( as a detiorating physical disease) or does one have to be affected by outside stressors(IE food, exercise, anxiety)

Good luck with that!
I need to go see a Citizens Advice Bureau (there is one held twice a week literally 100yds from my front door, but of course when you're having a bad time even that's a bit of a challenge... ) Then I have to apply, appeal (they always turn you down the first time, then go to a meeting and basically beg.
Fingers crossed! (for you too!)

I'm not the best person to advise (this board is full of experts and I'm not one of them), but I would imagine
1) any kind of heavy lifting and straining probably can aggravate IBS. I know if I have to do anything particularly strenuous part way through my stomach decides it has enough and kind of flips out. Again - other people will know more, as this is just me.
2) I think this is a toughy! I would guess it does have to be affected by what you call external stressors, however, as sometimes your own subconscious can aggravate the condition I guess it's external and internal factors! However, I don't think it would be classed as a detiorating disease - it is influenced by other things. Although, as we all know some days your stomach is just determined to have a bad day!
You need better advise than mine on this one, but they're my thoughts anyway :)
