I'm 17, 5'1", 125. I've known about my IBS for almost a year now, and I've changed my diet since November. Almost a year ago I ended up losing 30 lbs becaue I became deathly ill, I gained 10 of it back and felt really confident about my body. Now, since changing my diet, my caloric intake has gone up,( and I really dont require a lot of calories, as a petite high school student, there isnt't much opportunity for as much activity as i would like during the day), and I've gained more weight. Prom is coming up, and my birthday is next week, I would love to get to 117, from 125 before prom, and at least have my appetite under control by my birthday. I used to eat cereal and milk, spinich, and whole grains everyday, and now i just find i'm hungry all the time. Drinking water hasnt helped much, I still end up starving by the time a meal rolls around.

Any advice?? Is it safe to go back to whole grains? I only switched my diet after I began experiencing constipation for over a week, and a ton of pain. Anything will help. Thanks a bunch!

heathers cheat sheet!

it might take a second to load but it explains which foods are safe, which ones need caution, and which ones to stay away from. whole grains is under the caution area but what type do you eat? bread/rice/pasta/crackers [?] usually everyone here will say that you can eat and IF [insoluble fiber] if you eat a sufficiant amount of SF [soluble fiber] beforehand--which i agree with. but it also depends on the person. the grain products contain more fiber but sometimes grainy foods and IF can cause more-then-you-want gas which can also cause C. explore your options w/that chart and keep the foods that agree with you! those will become your staple.

for prom/your birthday you should set a smaller goal of weightloss like 5 pounds to start. give yourself a certain date that you want to have 5 pounds gone and really work at it but dont go overboard. just exercise and eat right--lots of fruits are good for snacks! on the safe list theres mangoes/papayas and if you can tolerate, theres a whole bunch on the yellow column! after you reach your goal you can always set a new one. good luck and have fun at prom!

What kind of IBS do you have? I'm really stable but am basically IBS-A, and lately have been experimenting a little with low carb diets (not generally a good idea, as you can see from a lot of information on this site). But, I will tell you that I basically have no BMs when I'm on it, so if you are D, consider upping your protein a lot, while keeping your soluble fiber at a good level. Protein keeps you full much longer than carbs, so give it a try.

Are you saying when you do a no or low carb diet, it makes you more C? I was considering it, but not if it's going to make my C worse. I was thinking of doing the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Not to lose weight...but to try and control the bloat and gas better.

Thanks!

i know that low-carb diets can be constipating. just think about it - fiber (SF and IF) comes from/with carbohydrates. so less carbs means less fiber. i know atkins is an extreme case, but i know it was constipating for people with normal systems, so i'd imagine this would be really tough for C.

I'm following a low g.i. diet at the moment. My carbs come from vegetables, predominantly. I generally consume enough fiber from vegetables to keep things flowing. I generally eat some vegetables at every meal--even breakfast, with lean protein. Yes, by eliminating specific carbs, a specific kind of gas/pain is eliminated too.

I have IBS-D. I note a decrease in my D symptoms (as long as I avoid IBS triggers, i.e. dairy, unsafely prepared veggies & raw foods, high fat foods/meals, red meat, etc.) I haven't been C, yet, but...there are other issues associated with C besides fiber.

This is a controversial issue among IBS'ers. I eat this way for reasons not having to do with IBS. I have a mood disorder & epilepsy and this sort of diet helps control symptoms. I also feel more energized when I eat this way.

Kate, IBS-D.

Thanks Kate,
But I think your daily meals would make me sicker than a dog if I ate that way! At least I don't think I could. I just think to follow the EFI diet, you need to buffer yourself with breads/rice/potatoes, etc. I don't think the SF veggies are enough buffer by themselves. And, so far, I think I better stick to this diet for a while longer...with hopes.

I'm not trying to offend you. I ate that way when I was anorexic....and there is no way I could go back to that without getting enough calories or getting vicious pain (or an Eating Disorder mentality again...I'm not that strong into my recovery ). Plus, I love potatoes to much!! And sandwiches...my favorite lunch!

But then again, I have read "Dangerous Grains" and this makes sense too. It said rice was the only carb that didn't cause gas. So, this is confusing with the guidelines here. I don't know...I'm just babbling out loud now. Like you said, it's controversial, isn't it!

I'm glad it works for you....but it would kill this girl! Of course you must do whatever is healthiest for you! Take care of that body of yours! It's the only one we get, unfortunately. I'd trade mine in for a new one in a heartbeat!

Okay...weren't we talking about the prom!

My understanding is this: Fiber (both IF and SF) is indigestible. It must leave your body as waste. Protein, fat, and non-fiber carbs can be absorbed and either burned or stored by your body. When you aren't taking in any fiber at all, then you're not taking in anything that has to turn into waste. So, most of what you eat will stay in your body as fuel or fat. The idea with the low-carb or no-carb diet is that your body burns up the protein and then burns up your fat stores, and there isn't much to pass through. I'm not a scientist so I don't know if this is all correct, but it makes sense. So, I'd say that if you are C (which I know you are) switching to a low-carb or no-carb diet will likely make things much worse. I have no idea what the specific carb diet is so I can't comment with regard to that.
