I adore Amy Tan. I was engrossed by SAVING FISH FROM DROWNING. Have you read any of her stuff? THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE, perhaps? (Had a bit of a book buying binge! Non-smoking rewards! Yes, I'm a lit. binge type!)
Reading anything absorbing, lately?
Kate.

i've read joy luck club & the kitchen god's wife. both quite good. i encountered the chess chapter of jlc twice in middle school, as a short story - every time i'm at waverly place i think of waverly place jong.
if you're looking for engrossing, you must read 'the time traveller's wife.' 600 pages or so, and you'll wish there were twice as many. probably the perfect book for the immersion you're looking for.
other wonderful engrossing consuming captivating books: the sparrow (by mary doria russel - a sci-fi concept, but so well-written that you'll never notice - in book store's it's in with the regular fiction) moo (by jane smiley - a little fluffy, but wonderful - she takes about 15 storylines and braids them together seamlessly) the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay (michael chabon) the clan of the cave bear (by jean auel - a classic, as far as i'm concerned. but don't get into the books that follow - the mystery of the storyline's will draw you in, but the quality of the books, sadly, plummets.) the radiant way (by margaret drabble) and my roommate suggests extremely loud and incredibly close (jonathan safran foer - i haven't gotten to read it yet, but it sounds great).
i've also been getting into really interesting non-fiction recently - 'the history of the world in five glasses' and 'everything bad is good for you' are both really fun, interesting, and engrossing. they don't transport you like fiction, but they're really good, too.
hope that helps. (i'm dangerous with book recommendations - once i start i have trouble stopping.)

Thanks for the list! I agree re: some of your top picks. Fully intend to explore what I haven't read yet.
Glorious distraction. I live to read. It's terrible, but often I avoid the light of day for 4 or 5 days in my "cave" camped out with pounds of books, only to exit my house to acquire more reading material, DVD's, food, and well...the usual creature necessities.
Actually, it's terrible in a funny way. I always smoked outdoors & now I don't smoke & rarely go outdoors. Honestly, most days I haven't a clue what the weather is like.
Yup, I'm a "cavebear."
Kate.
