on fitday i've been using 'sweetpotato, baked in skin' for my microwaved sweetpotatoes, though i don't eat the skin. today i noticed the choice of 'sweetpotato, boiled withut skin,' and figured that might be more accurate, as i don't eat the skin. what i don't understand is how the numbers vary so much for a cup of each:

baked in skin: 206 calories, .22g fat, 48g carb, 3.5g protein.
boild w/out skin: 344 cal, .9g fat, 80g carb, 5.5g protein.

this makes no sense. even with the skin potato having more fiber, there's no accounting for 140 extra calories in the skinless. for the fiber in the skin to account for the difference, there would need to be 30g of fiber from the skin in *one* cup of mashed potato - that's barely more than one potato. what's going on?

i don't add anything but salt, but in terms of planning my days, the difference is huge, and i don't know which is right.

Well, fitday is not always 100% accurate, and otherwise I'm not sure exactly how to explain this. I'm pretty sure BOTH the baked and boiled entries in fitday assume that you DON'T eat the skin since both are mashed and both have the same amount of fiber (6g in one cup mashed for both). There IS some difference in calories depending on how you prepare foods (i.e. baking vs. boiling) before you even add any other ingredients, but I can't imagine it would be a 140 calorie difference!
