Hi. If anyone can help me I'd be very grateful!
I was recently diagnosed with IBS back in February after having had blood tests, endoscopies etc. to rule-out other possibilities. I suffered mild symptoms for 4 years, but I moved from the UK to the USA to start a new job in October 2004, after which my symptoms have got much worse and are now almost unbearable. To cut a long story short, the symptoms did not start after any discernable GI insult, and modifying my diet in consultation with a dietician has not helped. There does not seem to be any correlation with anything I am eating (I have tried exclusions, none worked). My symptoms are that I have constipation for up to 4 days, and on the 5th day I find myself running to the bathroom up to 10 times with very painful cramping, nausea, and then feeling exhausted. Zelnorm and IBS Advantage are not having any effect, and even prescription-strength laxatives (Glycolax) are only moderately effective, and cannot be used continuously. I think my IBS is intensified by stress (I work 60-70 hours/7 days a week in a high-pressure environment and I don't have any friends and family close by any more). However, I cannot afford to have counselling, and I don't think that will help anyway (tried it before, never did much to prevent me getting stressed - it's just my personality I think!).
Had anyone got any suggestions? Can anyone help? I have just about run out of ideas.

Hi, I would say try Heather's diet and acacia fiber supplement. Also, you might want to try the self hypno. I haven't tried yet myself, but many have found it effective. I may help you cope with your job stress. Also, you can use Glycolax on an ongoing basis, and you can take up to four 17 gram doses per day. If your constipation comes from spasms like mine does, you may want to try an anti-spasmodic medicine. -Bob

Just wanted to agree with Bob about trying Heather's diet and supplements. You mention some diet experiments but have you look at all of Heather's advice on this site (not just the boards). I didn't get into the boards for a few weeks because I had so many dietary changes to cope with I would get very confused. When I felt like I could try the boards I was so happy to see all the support that this gang gives new people. But I ordered Heather's books and decided that everything else I tried had failed so I needed to do this diet with total commitment and give it a fair chance to work. I am primarily a D but an A lately. Within a few days I had pain, bloating and gas relief. I've heard that C's take longer to get relief but anything is better than living in misery every day! Good luck and hope you get all the support you need around here.

OK, thanks for the advice. I will try to adopt some of the diet suggestions and recipes on this site.
