I went to a convention today and man that always shows me how far I've come because they used to be torture! B: m.o.m. Wow I think I did pretty good today considering.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I forgot to list my excersize! I took my dog for a walk today (I actually tired him out!!!), mowed both our lawns (front and back), cleaned up the kitchen, and am about to go play Dance Dance Revolution! It's a really fun game just so everyone knows and you get a great work out from it! Plus I'll probably do some crunches tonight and some yoga poses to wind down.

For 5/14:
Breakfast: Banana and yogurt
I forgot to eat lunch, so I just had a couple of snacks... 2 WW berry bars and another banana. We were running around doing errands and I didn't want to eat out.
Dinner: Large Wendy's chili w/6 cracker packs and a mini frosty.
Dessert: 1 piece of cake.
Water intake: 40 oz.
Total 27 WW points.
Activity: I went swimming for an hour or so.
The best part: NO ABDOMINAL PAIN, no gas, no bloating, no D, no C. It was a good day.

I'm fairly new, but I am amazed and confused at the types of foods listed in this post. Tons of UFO's which I know are unsafe, yogurt, cheese, milk, frosty (which are all dairy products and totally unsafe), cauliflower and chili, which is gassy and bloating, coffee which is a huge GI trigger, cake...
I'm very confused. I thought most, if not all of these foods, are totally against Heather's diet. I know we all have different triggers, but I thought the dairy, coffee, UFOs, cake were no no's for everyone.
Do you guys follow the diet at all? Or are you stable now and I too will be able to eat these foods one day too? That would be WONDERFUL.
I'm not trying to be shame shaming, honestly. It's just as a new poster, I was shocked to see that anyone on Heather's diet was eating these foods on a regular basis. I've seen postings for cottage cheese too, which is totally dairy. I am totally confused if it is okay to eat/drink these foods, now. Please enlighten me.

Ah, this is why we often code foods as UFO's. To avoid this confusion. Sometimes people are eating safe substitutes (like my coffee, for example) and not explaining it. There's also non-dairy yogurt and cheese. Also, there are plenty of very delicious cakes in Heather's cookbook, so cake is definitely not always a bad food. So sometimes the foods look like no-no's but are safe replacements. Sometimes people are eating the no-no's, a)because IBS is different for everybody and those things don't bother them, or b) because they're cheating and either hope to miraculously avoid the consequences or don't care. Sometimes people want to eat something and don't mind that they'll suffer the consequences. It's all a personal decision. Someday you might get stable enough to risk a tiny Frosty, or you might not want to.

Thanks for the explanation. So, your really not drinking "real coffee" but something like Teeccino? And the "cheese" is soy cheese or rice cheese, and the yogurt could be soy yogurt? I guess I thought it would just say soy yogurt or rice cheese if it was. And I know they don't make lactose free Frosties! Or lactose free cottage cheese, because I've looked for that one!
Anyhow, thanks for explaining that these may not be safe, but the people are eating them anyways. I think I will forego these. Darn, I was so hoping I had come upon some postings that would bring these foods back into my life safely. Should have known it was too good to be true!
I must say, the UFO postings get me very curious as to what they are! Inquiring minds want to know!
Thanks again for the explanation chinagrl.

Yep, not real coffee but Teecino. Eh, it's a lazy thing. We've been reporting in for so long that I figure most o' the regulars know my coffee is faux and so I don't bother with the longer words. I do put quotation around things like "chicken" in "chicken" soup because I'm a strict vegetarian. But it still seems more normal than Veat Noodle Soup which looks strange and would need more explanation.
And, if you hang around enough you start to figure out what people's frequent UFO's are too. I know someone who's most common UFO is popcorn...
I bet we could come up with a lactose free frosty recipe if we thought about it... the normal recipe calls for: 1/2 cup milk 2 cups vanilla ice cream 4 teaspoons Nesquik chocolate drink mix
With some soy milk, soy ice cream, (and from what I can tell, Nesquik looked ok) we have a fairly IBS safe Frosty! You'd only want to drink a little because the fat content could be pretty high...

I thought it might help to see what other people were eating for meals so that I could get a better handle on what I could eat safely for my meals. I'm getting tired of plain cream of rice, rice, canned fuit, carrots, and more rice! I thought I could get some insightful ideas to get a more varied, but still safe diet.
Maybe it would help to go back a while and see what the older posts say. Maybe the wording would be more complete. I am so symptomatic that I don't dare cheat yet or stray from Heather's basic guidelines at all yet.
Thanks again for the explanation. I appreciate you taking the time to explain it all to me.
BTW, isn't it hard to do a vegetarian diet and still manage the IBS? With all the veggies and fruits? How do you get your protein? I can't do soy, so maybe that is why it wouldn't work for me. I'll have to check out the vegetarian menus from anyone who report in. Doesn't seem like many people are reporting in though. Too bad, it could be very helpful.

Looking at the menu's is a good idea- but I'll admit, not one that I think we considered. Since this board is about gaining/losing weight I think we have always considered it more about accountability for calories and fat and less about as a model for others. That's why it's separated off from the Diet for IBS board. Maybe we'll have to think about the possibility of people wanting to use it that way...
And yeah, I eat a lot of soy for protein. It doesn't bother me at all. I can eat a lot of cooked veggies, usually once you cook them they don't bother people who are stable (though you have to figure out which ones will always be triggers). I eat a ton of vegetable soup!

Sorry if it's me throwing you off. As I understand it, my IBS is pretty mild compared to many around here, dairy is my main no-no. But I can eat yogurt as long as I have a banana too... and a lot of things that other people list as triggers don't bother me much at all.
Just because I'm here, doesn't mean I'm strictly on "Heather's Diet". I'm figuring out what works for me. (I feel like I should put a disclaimer in my siggie!)

It wasn't just you that was confusing me. Don't worry about it. Chinagrl explained everything.
Lucky you for not having severe IBS. Mine is pretty darn bad, so I do Heather's diet strictly. I still have no relief though.
So if you can eat yogurt and cake and a frosty, more power to you! Want to change symptoms? I just won't be using this board as sample of what is safe to eat! I would be in bigger trouble, symptom wise!

Just so you know, Cyndy, it's easy for a vegan to get enough protein without including soy in the diet.

I'm not trying to be shame shaming, honestly. It's just as a new poster, I was shocked to see that anyone on Heather's diet was eating these foods on a regular basis. I thought this might happen. Don't feel bad; you are perfectly right. And I think it seems like a very good idea to read what people are really eating to see day to day diet plan ideas, but alas there is too much here to stumble a new person. I am sorry if my diet did that and I hope some people might be scared straight. It is really hard though isn't it to be strict day after day? Maybe we should ride each other a little; maybe some gentle urging would make everyone stricter and then feel better.? (especially Sinead with her biscuits/cookies j/k ) I've seen postings for cottage cheese too, which is totally dairy. I am totally confused if it is okay to eat/drink these foods, now. Please enlighten me.
P.S. I was shocked like you a while back when a question was asked about who smokes. I could not believe anyone with IBS smokes; it just flabbergasted me. And I apologize for being so shocked!

Look at my report for today NO SNACKS! I don't scold you for your blue chxxse! so back off !
Me and my cookies are very happy together. (not true, we, by we I mean P, decided not to refill the biscuit tin to keep temptation away from me and I have put safe marshmallow wafer things and luna bars in it and one pack of cookies that I don't like)
Seriously though Cyndy, Heather herself admits to eating chocolate (treat size snickers if I remember correctly), so it is possible if you know what your own triggers are to stray from the always safe list.
I started this diet last August and didn't eat anything remotely unsafe for three and a half months (Christmas). I am stable and in control of my diet so I know what I can tolerate. But this doesn't meant that you can. I remember reading posts where people were eating non trigger foods that I could never again imagine eating again, things like IF vegetables, brown rice, brown bread, but once I got stable I got to reincorporate them into my diet.
