Hi - my name is Missy. I currently have a 18 month old baby boy. Right after I had him, I had to have immediate gall bladder surgery because of lots and lots of gall stones. Anyway, this caused my IBS-constipation - to change to IBS-diarrhea. Now I am miserable. I am a military wife, so medical care is free, but the doctors are not so great. I have so many questions and all they want to do is put me on pills that stop the diarrhea, but not prevent it. Tonight, I found this website...I am so happy, I am near tears. I had such a bad espisode today. I ordered the big kit so I can try everything. I cant wait to get it and read the books. Anyway, some questions:

1. Will I ever be able to have another child? I desperatly want my son to have a brother/sister, but I am so afraid of the pain with my episodes that I dont think I can handle it!! Does anyone have experiance with pregnancy and IBS - Diarrhea? When I was prego before, it was IBS - constipation and not as painful or hard to control.

2. Has anyone here ever heard - or have experiance with - a change in IBS forms after pregnancy or gall bladder removal? Is that normal?

3. How long will it take, once I get started with the tea and Acacia, to start to feel "normal" again?

I hope I dont seem too up-front or questioning. This experiance has been so scary (I am sure you all agree). My whole life I have dealt with this. I was so afraid to go to the doctor. The only reason I started was because it got so painful. They make me feel so whimpy and stupid when I go in to see them - like I am just simply experiancing a "little" cramping and a little diarrhea. I just want my life back. We just got transferred to a new base and I want to work and go back to college, but I am so afraid. Please help!!!

Thanks,

Missy

Hi Mary!

Welcome to the boards! Congrats on your baby and sympathy for all the pain you've been through!! You probably want to repost this on the Diet for IBS thread- more people will see it there. I will say that lots of people on this board are pregnant or trying, and that people with IBS have kids all the time, so don't worry about that. I don't know about the second question, and as for the third- I'm not sure anyone can promise you will ever feel "normal" completely again. IBS is a syndrome, which means we all deal with it as part of our daily life. Some of us can go long stretches, once we're stable, without pain and with normal bowel movements. Some people can't. Some people have to be really really strict with the diet and some cheat with little consequences. Everybody's different. The hope is to feel a lot better, and to keep functioning, even if you can never go back to your old diet or lifestyle. Good luck!! And I hope after you repost people give you good answers!

Hi, and welcome! I'm a military wife too! So I totally sympathize about Tricare, etc. I'm sure the stress of moving isn't helping either, as stress is a big IBS trigger for a lot of people.

As unhelpful as it sounds, everyone is different. Start by getting yourself stabilized and learning how to eat. Once you get that under control, you will have a better idea of how manageable other things will be for you.

Hello and welcome. Here's my attempt to answer your questions...

Yes, don't worry lots of people, like Lana, Torbetta and Han Solo have been pregnant with IBS and others, like Cara and RachelT are currently pregnant
2. Has anyone here ever heard - or have experiance with - a change in IBS forms after pregnancy or gall bladder removal? Is that normal?
Yes, Any abdominal trauma can bring on symptoms
3. How long will it take, once I get started with the tea and Acacia, to start to feel "normal" again?
It depends, sticking to the diet is your first step. Keep a food diary to monitor what you eat, your bowel motions (BMs) and your symptoms. Try the Breaking the Cycle (What to Eat when you can't eat anything) , for a few days to calm your symptoms down, then graduate to Casey's suggestions for what to do next As you stabilise ie have less symptoms you can add new safe foods to your repertoire. Make sure that you drink lots of water and peppermint or fennel teas. ANY cheating from the diet will just stop you from stablising faster. Once you do a few days of "breaking the cycle" you will start to feel better especially when you add in some chicken breast and carrots etc to your plain rice. We are all here for you to help you get through this. Its hard work to get used to the diet but SOOO worth it!
