I was wondering if it is normal to have a couple weeks of rough times after having something that didn't agree with you. If I had known I would feel bad for 2 weeks I wouldn't have ate it! But is that the case or is something else bothering me? I keep a food journal and everything had been going well and now my bloat and pain and sometimes gurgles are back. I don't even want to say my tummy hurts after telling everyone about my fabulous diet. I am bloating after eating perfectly safe food and my stools are a bit hard too. I'm not sure what is going on, but I tell you what I am going to be extremely strict for awhile- no bites of anything bad even on a full stomach. Any comments, help, suggestions?

so sorry you are not feeling great at the moment--I can't offer any answers, as I have had this happen to me too--I just got over a few days of "the gurgles and bloating" and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. It is very frustrating but I think it is just part of this condition. I think you are right to be strict with your diet for awhile--doesn't seem worth eating something that you know will cause such discomfort for so long...wishing you better days!

Hi Tamara,

Sorry you are having a rough time. Keeping a food journal is a good idea. Hopefully you can trace what is causing this flare-up. Have you started any new meds? Could it be stress?

Eat safe foods and take it easy.

Hi Little Minnie,

I get this too after I eat Something Terrible-- for me it would be some combination of cheese with, like, acidy tomatoes for example.

It takes me 2 weeks to stop constant attacks after that, unless right after that first awful wave of attacks is over, and I purge the last of it out by drinking lots of water, I fast completely. I don't even drink water for 1 to 1 1/2 days-- nothing except a chewable Imodium Advanced or two (no water required). It gives my gut time to heal and starting slowly on the second day I can begin again with a small portion of chicken and rice. By the third day I can resume eating small portions of my IBS-D diet, and I've thwarted 2 weeks of constant D.

It takes a lot of control to do it, and sometimes it's just not possible to fast. It does work for me, though, and it's better than the alternative.

I wish you the best of luck, I know it's not fun--

~nel~

I know what caused the flare up. It was 2 weeks ago tomorrow when I went to lunch at a friend's. She had me make pasta primavera and I took out a plate for me and added cream and cheese to the rest. She accidentally put dressing on all the salad but I thought she didn't have too much oil. She also made fabulous bruschetta and it was probably too oily. I was gassy afterward and took a nap. The next day I wanted my hub to eat the leftover pasta but he didn't want it and I wasn't going anywhere so I ate some. Nothing horrible happened but ever since I have been more bloated, painful and upset. Today I am in a lot of pain! and I tried to cook some carrots for lunch real soft and they burned and I just need comfort food, hugs and a good romantic movie.

I am in what I always call a bad spell. I had that leaf of giant basil on my sandwich for lunch and it was tough and stalky and then I felt yucky, had tea and it helped with the pain but I was gassy. Then right before dinner I had D- really bad. I hadn't had bad D for a couple months. I had more rice and carrots for dinner and have to just rest now. This really sucks. It just is so annoying to have to start over. I am having company tomorrow and don't want to eat rice again. (I am making cedar plank salmon, fat free garden potatoes, salad and bagette and peach cobbler for dessert.) It is so disappointing that I am so senstitive when I thought I was doing so well.

Oh poo!!! I'm sorry you're not feeling too good. It's so hard to tell sometimes what's gonna trigger us. I hope you're feeling better for your company tomorrow.

Oh, yeah, I know those bad spells well! I think you identified the trigger, and yes, something like that can set me off for two weeks easy. Don't get discouraged. You're doing everything right and these setbacks just happen sometimes. We're not perfect, we're human. And we're changing a lifetime's worth of eating habits, so three steps forward one step back is STILL progress.

Sounds like a lovely dinner you're making for your company tomorrow. Just skip the salad, don't eat too much salmon and save your peach cobbler for later and you'll be fine, fine, fine. And what a good hostess you are!! Oh, and if I were you, I'd take 1 Imodium before dinner tomorrow just as a preventive, especially since you just had D.

Feel better, hon.

Hello -
I was looking for recipes for IBS and I just found this sight and saw your message. I completely understand your pain so I thought I would share a few things that have helped me tremendously. There is a dietary supplement that I have found to work wonders for my IBS! It is called Prelief. It is made by the same company who made Beano. It takes the acid out of food and beverages. On the website it is even listed as a "help" for people with IBS and spastic colin. It is in the major grocery stores (list on the website) or you can order it online at www.prelief.com. Beano also helps with the gas. Between the two I am able to eat just about anything now. Also, if I have a really bad spell (D) I drink hot Red Tea which heals my stomach extremely quickly. It has no caffeine and has one of the highest amounts of antioxidents; even more than green tea. The brand I enjoy is The Republic of Tea: www.republicoftea.com. Good Hope Vanilla is one of my favorites although there are other flavors. You can get it at Barnes and Nobles, grocery stores, tea stores or online.
I hope these help and you feel better soon! Hang in there!

Hi, and welcome!! So nice of you to share what has worked for you. And yum did you ever come to the right place for recipes! Heather's SUCH a food ace!

Prelief and Beano are definite helpers for a lot of people here. I also think someone else just mentioned The Republic of Tea! Good Hope Vanilla rings a bell somehow.

Keep coming back okay? It's a great group here.
