Hi all -

Been lurking around for a couple of weeks and have been following the diet from this board. I am 29/m from NY and have had some stomach issues since college -- usually D would come and go but over the few years it has gotten worse. Basically get the urge out of the blue and have to get to the BR ASAP!

Went to my dr. and based on my symptoms and lousy diet(lots of fast food, ice cream, steak, chicken, not much of any fiber) he suggested I first try a more balanced diet. I am about 6' and weight 170lbs and rarely move from that number so he didn't feel it was something more serious. This did help get rid of the pain and D and C combo which I was grateful for. Two weeks ago was bored over the weekend and had some ice cream -- too much actually - and had a miserable week.

My dr believes I have a spastic colon so I have a call into him to get a followup based on my latest episode. Over the last few days I have attempted to have a small spinach salad with my dinner -- has never been a issue. What I have now noticed is I am passing the salad within 12 hours of eating it. I know it might seem like an odd question, but has anyone else had this issue? I have never noticed anything getting through my system that fast before and was curious if anyone here has had this happen and if it might be a sign of something else?

Thanks for all the advice on this board so far -- I am hoping to get my life back on track soon!

Hi John,

I find that raw vegetables will go through me quite quickly and I rarely eat them now. Even the lettuce on a subway sub will bother me. I do have to work on getting more vegetables into my diet.

I had some of the same syptoms as you and what has worked is 1- making sure I don't cheat at all, I have absolutely NO dairy products or other foods that I know trigger me, it's no longer worth it. and 2- taking a fiber suppliment. Both make a huge difference.

Cheers!

I've had IBS for over 10 yrs now & still could eat salads for most of that time but finally had to give that up too. Lettuce & tomatoes just don't work for me anymore. I can eat one thin slice of tomato but that's about it.

Welcome John. Sorry to hear of your state but happy to have you come here. I went through a spell in my early twenties when food came out within minutes -whole. A papaya one time and a BK broiler (with sesame seeds). I still don't eat the BK but I have tried papaya again. I was in an especially bad spell when my IBS first started and I messed myself up not knowing what to do. I am IBS-A and was taking correctol to be regular but then getting awful D. So yes it has happened to others. I hope the diet really works for you and feel free to ask any questions. Good luck!

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Hi JOhn- I am fairly new too--hope you begin to feel better--for me, lettuce of any kind and most of the time spinach as well, will exit almost whole and very quickly--actually I don't think anything stays with me 12 hours! I have cut out all dairy and carbonated drinks, and red meat and I take the Acacia powder too--all have helped--you might try to stay away from salads for awhile and see if you feel like it makes a difference--hope you feel better soon.

Welcome, John!

As everyone has indicated, with IBS, it is possible for things to go through you at lightning-fast speeds. I was amazed recently when a peppermint cap made its exit just 90 minutes after entry (there wasn't much in my system at the time). I couldn't believe it!

If and when you do try salad again, I recommend chewing it *very* thoroughly. Since I've started to do that, I find that I have fewer problems with it causing D.

Good luck!

Heather's book recommends eating the salad "after" a meal with soluables.

I appreciate the feedback -- just making sure that what I was going through was somewhat normal with this condition.

Another questionfor you all....Remeber I have not be dx with IBS oficially but i do have spells of D - 95% of the time in the morning before 10AM and usually I am fine the rest of the day until the next morning. But from 6-10 i have an urge and bang have to go - 2-5 times. Do others experience this type of "scheduled" BM?? Trying to see if work causes this -- i am working from home during the RNC in NYC so it will be an interesting test. Might just have to win the lottery so I can quit.

Thanks All

Well, good luck on winning the lottery!

Yes, I have that problem, too with 4 hours or so of being "on-call" and close to a BR! Mine is usually between 10pm-2am (lucky me, huh?). Occasionally it happens in the morning. After the 4 hours are over, I'm usually OK the rest of the day unless I really cheat on food.

You're in good company here. Welcome!

I have found that in talking to men about stuff like this it seems more common to have 'before work' problems and especially on Monday mornings. I'm not sure about it but I've heard it several times. So that would indicate some stress. So I wonder if you will be better when working at home. Either way stress is a big factor for all and doing relaxation stuff or even taking meds for it helps a lot of people. This is just a theory though. Good luck.
