Hi everyone Im new to this ibs board and just wondering if anyone knows if a food is safe if it says it contains a milk protein eg whey or casein or has lactose in it even when its low fat and full of soluble fiber?? I live in the uk you see and the other day I bought a packet of caramel flavoured rice cakes but on the back it said contains a milk protein and lactose...does this mean I should avoid it just because of this or not?? Im finding this is happening a lot with foods that seem safe...any advice would be appreciated! Thanks Natalie xx

Natalie,
The general answer is to avoid products with milk derivatives, which would make your rice cakes a no-no. However, I have found that I can eat stuff like that with no problem. It's true DAIRY FOODS (particularly full-fat ones) that give me problems.
If you're stable, give them a try and see how you do!

That is great you are reading labels. You may want to do a board search, because this topic has been brought up in the past.
Whey and casein are milk proteins, so it is a good idea to avoid foods if you are sensitive to milk protein. I know I am not lactose intolerate, but it is the protein in milk that bother me. Once I stopped eating and drinking dairy products my C approved alot.
You can also do a search under google.com and it will pull up alot of great info. about milk protein.

Isn't it annoying that they want to put milk in EVERYTHING? The short answer is ... maybe. You may be able to tolerate small quantities of these things. For example, almost all soy cheeses containe casein and whey. Wihtout them, they taste awful. We still recommend soy cheeses even though they have milk products, because it's better than regular cheese. Kind of the lesser of two evils. Does that answer your question in a roundabout way?
