My doc diagnosed me with IBS without running tests, saying I should try fiber and charcoal and see how I felt. That was last month. I'm feeling worse, with some pain (I never had cramping before) and also a lot of water retention. My breasts hurt, like I've got PMS even though I'm not due. Any ideas, besides another visit to the doctor? Maybe the bloating is unrelated, but I'm not ruling anything out. On a happier note, I've noticed what foods seem to be a problem, and they fit with Heather's guidelines- so thanks!

Charcoal???!!! Aside from the stuff you use in a grill, not sure what that is!! What kind of fiber have you been eating???? It MUST be mostly soluble, or you will have tons of bloating and water retention, etc.!! Are you familiar with the soluble/insoluble fiber differences??? Here's a link.. soluble/insoluble fiber . Let us know if you have any other questions. I hope I've helped you!

Just a guess, but could it be the type of fiber you are taking? You might try lowering your dose or trying a different kind. I'll let others give you more advice on that because I can't take the fiber supplements.
Is the charcoal for gas? Have you tried Phazyme for gas? It really helps me. Are you trying to eat the safe foods? Keeping a food diary?
The tender breasts are not a sign of IBS and really does sound more like something hormonal with the water retention, too. Can't help you there.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thanks for the suggestions- I've been taking 2 capsules of soluble fiber a day. I'll try just one for a little while and see if that helps with the water retention. I eat lots of rice and potatoes, white bread, etc, too. The charcoal, by the way, is for gas and comes in tablets (I'd been taking simethicone and it made me feel awful- the charcoal is much gentler).

I know it sounds goofy...but I too have water retention and sore breasts when my IBS is at it's worst!!! Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I always have attributed it to the IBS!

Hi M. Make sure you read more through the advice on this sight on what to eat and on the things that help - like fennel and peppermint. It seems this may give you better advice than your doc. I'm having a day of hating doctors too! Will they ever get it?! With the water retention - also check the salt in your diet, that can up the water retention just as much as trigger foods sometimes. Good luck with the diet. Min

Well, that's the thing- I'm not sure. There's no rhyme or reason to the BMs, so I don't know which I am. I do know that the last time I had a cup of black tea I was in pain. I would like to eat more insoluble fiber. I cut back on my raw veggies and things like granola and nuts. Should I start eating more of them again?

WOW, as if the other symptoms of IBS aren't enough. I never really thought of sore breasts as a symptom of IBS but maybe if you have water retention it could be. I bet we could trace almost every ailment we have back to IBS. Darn!

Raw veggies??? That's a no-no!!!! You should read my post on incorporation insolubles!!! web page
I'm not completely sure on this, but this is my own interpretation of the water retention thing...I believe that there is a direct link between the amount of water that's being absorbed by the colon and what's being absorbed by the body. For instance, if I have too much calcium (which I have a tendency to do, and I pay for it with calcium deposits in my heels/arches as well as C, even when I'm not taking suppliments) I retain water for some reason. Maybe this is not IBS related, and a calcium problem instead...but I actually believe that somehow it's all related. (am I rambling, sorry?!)
