IBS after baby?

Did anyone else develop their symptoms after childbirth? I was "normal" until my first son was born. Then my insides went crazy on me. Things mysteriously cleared up when he was 2 1/2, then returned with the birth of the new baby 10 months ago. This leads me to believe that my hormones hve something to do with it. Doc is waiting on the results of a complete hormone panel to determine what treatment to use (he is a naturopath/M.D). I am miserable, and want to enjoy my baby!

Mine started within a week after giving birth to my 2nd daughter, who is now four and then has cleared up with this pregnancy (30 weeks!). I'm not sure mine was from the hormones but I know they did affect it. I had a difficult labor and delivery with my 2nd and they were getting ready to do a c-section when she finally arrived. At times I wonder if things would have been different if I had had the c-section. I am hoping that maybe it won't return after this baby comes but I'm not holding my breath on it.

Yes, this too happened to me after pregnancy. I went to 2 GI's who told me that it was not hormonal and it was just a cooincidence that it happened after birth. I wasn't buying it and on the advise of my OB/GYN I was referred to Dr. Mathias who has seen these axact cases and has successfully treated them. Essentially, what I have is insulin sensitivity brought on by the hormones of pregnency. Apparently, I was a carrier of this as many women are who have my past history. After reviewing my past history (little to no periods, ovulation problems etc..) and actually testing my bowels for insulin sensitive spikes in the contractions using an EEG machine, he came to this conclusion. He put me on a strict diet of only low glycemic carbs and no sugar. Essentially ingesting high carbs (which convert to sugar in your system) and sugar caused my body to react in a way that diabetics react to type 2 diabetes. - except, it effected my bowel motility and contractions. After being on this diet for 8 weeks, I am a new woman with hardly any cramping or diarrhea. I feel like a now woman. I no longer feel like killing myself. I also had hormone blood test taken which showed elevated DHEA-Sulfate levels. This is a precurser to PCOS. He said if I had of taken the advise of my former GIs, I would eventually end up with full blown PCOS, diabetes and even ovarion cancer - yikes. Anyway - it couldn't hurt to give him a call and maybe do a phone consultation. His name is Dr. John Mathias. He works at the Texas Women's Hospital in Houston, Texas. Couldn't hurt.

Hope you feel better soon no matter what regimin you are on,

Dana

Thnk you so much for sharing your story with me! I have also been told that sugar has to go far away from my diet. Dr. Scheinbart recommended stevia, which is an herb, to sweeten tea, and you can even bake with it. He suspects I am estrogen dominant/low progesterone. He wants to wait on my test results, and then plans to prescribe a natural hormone cream. He also said I have to begin a daily exercise regimen to combat stress. The baby and I are now taking daily walks together, while my older son and husband bike along ahead of us. You have given me hope!

For the most part it hasn't affected me too bad. I still get anxious for my dr. apt. but it is defiantly not as bad as it used to be. I have not had any D since I've been pregnant. I still don't drink milk but I will eat cheese and ice cream. I have had cramps and gas after eating a roast and a few other food items but that was the extent of it. I've been eating salad although I couldn't eat it in the beginning because it would repeat and I hated that. I guess you can say I'm still following the IBS diet but I'm being much more lenient

You know Steph, I never had any morning sickness with this pregnancy. Maybe it's the third? I have no idea why. I was much more tired in the beginning and it is starting again but it's been a pretty easy pregnancy, minus the few physical problems and scares I have had.

The girls are very excited. Meike asks me every time I go to the dr. if the baby is coming out. All of my friends that were pregnant have had their babies; the last one was born last Tuesday. They are anxious. I painted the baby's room last week and I have to say I did a good job. I bought some flower and bee stamps from Home Depot that I'm going to use in the room, I think. We are going to try to paint Maddie and Meike's room this weekend and I bought a castle stamp so we can use that and the flower stamp in their room. I painted the baby's room a green color and the girls' room will be lilac so I will use those paints plus the yellow from the kitchen to stamp the rooms. I hope it turns out cute. This is my first attempt at decorating their rooms and we have been here 7 years.

Two weeks ago it felt like this baby was never going to come and now it feels like she will be here before we know it. Did I tell you we found out last Tuesday that we are defiantly having another girl?

Hello ladies,
I've had a mild case of IBS all my life, but it became 10 times worse when I was pregnant. Most women get constipated during pregnancy, but I was not so lucky. Now my baby is 16 months old, and it has not improved at all. I told my OB about it while I was pregnant, and he said it was nothing to worry about and it would probably go away after the birth of my daughter. When it didn't, I began to see a gastroenterologist. After dozens of tests and "I'm not sure"s from the doctors, I now take about 10 pills a day, still experiencing some (but not as much) symptoms as I used to. I've never heard of it being related to hormones, but it makes sense and it's something I'm definitely going to look into.

Hi again!

Well that's wonderful that you haven't had morning sickness with this baby. I get so sick. I hope that I won't next time....but I doubt it. Me and my sisters, and mom all have gotten so sick. I would love for my IBS to go away....it did when I was pregnant. But boy it came back 10 times worse after my last baby. I thought I had the flu non stop. Maybe it will reverse it next time around.

Well it sounds like we are doing the same thing. I just paninted my kids rooms. My girls is also painted lilac and my boys is blue. Now I'm just decorating them. Its been lots of fun! I'm sure you'll just love it when its all done. It's a lot of work. But very fun in the end!

Well I better run and do some house work! NO FUN!!!!
