hey,

well i'm back on the ibs diet after a week of bad ibs symptoms. i like the ibs diet because in essence it's truthfully good for you.

i had been eating a lot of baked goods and i started a new medication which increases one's appetite, so i was literally eating every shred of food in the cupboards and gourging on fatty, deep fried foods from restaurants.

today it stopped! (yay for me!)

instead of something full of fat and ibs triggers i had rice for dinner. i'm taking the next few days to stabilize.

tell me what you think of what i got for groceries, and please give me any suggestions, they'd be much appreciated.

my grocery list starting today:

soy vanilla flavoured liquid (the equiv. to milk i guess)
textured vegetable protein
rice crackers
sweet potatoes
bakery fresh italian bread
flour tortillas
tapioca pudding
cornmeal muffin mix
peppermint tea
egg whites
no yolks noodles
... and i think that was about it

i was really surprised that my grocery store, seeing as i live in a small town (not known for it's multicultralism) had the specialty items i was looking for.

in fact i noticed that my "movements" started to be more regular and less painful within hours of taking my metamucil and eating a lot of rice. i've had two really good one's so far... i felt healthy. but that's a little gross and after all i'm downing the rice crackers so i want to keep things palatable.

i don't think i'll have too much of a problem with some of the restrictions, personally i hate red meat, i don't drink coffee, and i don't drink alcohol often either... and bran yuck! my only vice is caffeine in soda... that will be a temptation, plus i'll have to find a way not to indulge in so much baked goods.

i kindof feel like a vegetarian, i wasn't eating much meat in the first place, and so i'm really excited about this, i think it will likely be good all around for me. the only thing is that to be healthy it costs a little more, because the items are specialty, but i would have to argue that it's a price worth paying!!

one question though.

how does canned tuna affect ibs? is it okay to eat, i'm not sure if it's something that i shouldn't have too much of.

well all your suggestions will be warmly appreciated. i can't wait to head on over to the recipe forum and get some new dishes to make, but for tonight i think i'm pooped... no pun intended lol

What an excellent and sensible attitude! Your diet sounds good and I am impressed. It will be great stuff to stabilize with. I am curious about the pudding though. Is that premade pudding? If it is it will be full of milk, but maybe you got the kind you make yourself and you will make it with soy milk. I really don't know what is in that but it was the one thing I was worried about. Good luck!

Tuna in water is best vs tuna in oil. As far as tapiocca, wouldn't that be in the dairy category which is a killer.

...there are definitely some pudding mixes that are vegan (and therefore dairy-free). Jell-O vanilla instant is. And I've found it does firm up with soy milk, although I've heard some people say it doesn't. Can't hurt to try!

Ryry, the only other item I saw that was a "maybe" is the cornbread mix - just check the box for dairy products, and if there's none, you're good to go. Otherwise, it looked great! I've been doing the diet for a couple months, and I'm starting to think in the direction you are - going veg. I haven't found it to be too much more expensive so far, first because I'm a DIY'er and I don't mind doing nutty things like making my own seitan from scratch, and second because meat is so darn expensive here. But anyway, good luck with that!

Canned tuna should be fine. Just be careful what you mix it with!

Welcome to the boards, and good luck on the diet!

welcome to the boards.. I'm kinda in the same boat, though I shopped for snack foods only- most of my regular diet already WAS this, except for the quicky treats and those always seemed to trigger me anyway... just need to work on more of those... and I had been getting better the last 2 weeks and one thing I'd been doing was eating cheerios as a snack at my desk on and off during the day and often eating half my lunch on my morning break.. I think I'm going to break it into 3.. plus breakfast and a snack when I get home and a late dinner and I'll be at the 6 small meals guideline.. today is day 1 since I work weekends of that.. I did 5 small meals yesterday actually and felt much better.. also was more careful of what went into them though....
Good luck- I hope you see results soon like I am starting to-

Hey, Ry, welcome back (your other post mentioned that you used to come here). You sound like a really cool person!

Your shopping list looks great! Tuna in water is one of my staples and I've been D-free for almost 7 months thanks to Heather!

Glad you're already noticing a difference! And you've got a great sense of humor! Someone I know says that puns are the highest form of humor, so there you go!!

Oh, the other thing I wanted to say is I see in your profile that you also have an anxiety disorder. There's quite a few people here with similar problems. Many of them have been helped by the hypnosis tapes that Heather sells. I know they're pretty expensive, especially because you're just starting college, but it might be something to keep in mind.

Good luck, and let us know how you're doing, okay?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post, it made me feel very welcome here!

And I did have a look and yes... the Tapioca had Dairy in it, so it's gone!

But the good news was that the Cornmeal Muffin Mix was in the specialty section and I made sure to check the ingredients and it was okay. They're all gone now, but they were good!

I've been feeling gradually healthier which is great news to report! I am pretty creative in the kitchen and tonight I made up some new recipes which I'll put in the recipe section of the message boards.

Thanks again, you all made me feel really welcome!
