hi all, and thank heaven for this website! i'm new to the site, and newly-diagnosed IBS (neither C nor D)
MD put me on a low dose of amitryptilene (an anti-depressant)... have any of you gone this route, with any success? i'm on day 4 of the meds and not convinced it's doing anything except giving me a wicked buzz... ??? -kk

Yes, this is my subject. I was put on it 3 years ago. Your right about the buzz part. You get used to it . But it never really help me. I still suffered terrible D & urgency coming on like a hurricane. I was afraid to be far from a bathroom. My recipe to stability started with Heather`s book "eating for IBS" . You can buy it here. The biggest factor I feel was the fiber supplement "Acacia" also bought from here. The rest is diet & the great support and advice here. Alot of wonderful caring people here. Just a little insight to a day of eating for me. Breakfast- Cereal w/rice milk vanilla flavor. Honeycombs or Corn pops. This w/bottled water & acacia fiber powder mixed in[it`s tastless].This is a good start to stabalizing your day. Lunch - sourdough bread w/turkey & fat free mayo[little bit]. Baked chips & animal crackers [dairy free]. Dairy is a huge trigger for D. Dinner time- Chicken w/rice or pasta. Fennel tea after dinner for bloating which I expereienced alot when first changed my eating habits. I hope this helps a bit. Start with books, acacia fiber, & stay with this sight. Good luck!

I took it for a year or so. It really did help me, as one of my biggest symptoms is unrelenting nausea. It stopped that. On the negative side I gained a bunch of weight from the sugar cravings. I'm not taking it anymore because I found some other meds that worked as well for me and didn't cause the food cravings. After a couple of days the weird feelings it caused went away for me though.
And welcome to the boards!

Right now I'm taking Nexium and Zelnorm, plus quick dissolve Levsin when I get attacks. Oh, and keeping a good supply of Equalactin around.

thanks for the insight... i got a chuckle reading your 'meal plan' - my job requires a lot of travel and i always bring a 'feedbag' full of exactly what you listed! i also have luck w/bananas and graham crackers. i'm taking lots of fiber-con and snacking on metamucil wafers in between meals.. do you find the acacia to be any different? i will give the amiT a couple weeks to see if it helps the pain, otherwise why bother.
