Hi Ya'll....

I have a question about urgency.. and just how bad ya'll have it.

Basically, alot of the time, I'm running to the bathroom within five minutes of finishing a meal. With stomach cramps and diarrhea. There are a few times when I can go an hour or two without having an attack.. but other times I've barely even stopped chewing the last bite.

I'm just wondering if this is common. My mom thinks that there is no way that it could be that food causing diarrhea that fast. She thinks there is no way the food has gone through my system within minutes.. enough to cause diarrhea. So Im thinking maybe it is something else.. another disorder.. or adding more to my stomach triggers D.. I'm so confused.

how urgent are you guys?!?

I'm sorry, but I disagree with mom. I know for a fact that she's incorrect from my own experience.

It happens whenever I eat a meal that is too much food, especially spaghetti! I can be half-way through my meal when the BIG D hits, and it's IMMEDIATE! Oh yeah. I've analyzed my spaghetti recipe and I can assure you there's nothing in it that's a trigger, but if I eat more than a salad plate full, I'll have to run to the loo -- oh yeah! And cramps too! Oy.

Sorry mom....

Bev

Ice Cream was the first thing that really started bothering me and yes, the reaction would be INSTANT. Not fun, I'm not sure exactly why it woul be so instant, but easily within 5 minutes of eating I'd be on the way to the facilities.

I found this was my exact problem as well. That's when my Dh told me to talk to my doctor because normally a person's body doesn't react to THAT meal that fast. But with IBS that's our problem...our GI tract (I think it is) works overtime and causes the trouble.

Also - I found that Dicetel would speed up this problem even worse. So maybe check the meds (If you are on any) to see if that makes it better to be off of them.

And- as Bev said, watch portion sizes. I eat off a saucer all the time. That helps me watch my portions. Also I only have a handful of something for me snacks instead of a bowl. Keep my portions in control.

Feel better soon!

Hey there!!
I have the urgency thing too...only it's not with D. I'm a C and when I'm somewhat regular, I have urgency during meals.

Hi guys.. thanks for the responses...

what is it about this that makes us have to go sooooooo bad.

I thought my mom might be wrong.. but she made a good point.. she said even food poisoning sometimes takes 24hours to cause diarrhea... how is it that I have to go within minutes of eating. I totally see where she is coming from cause it baffles me too...

Lanamarie.. what did your doctor say caused this urgency?

My doctor actually never taught me anything about my IBS, he just put me on Dicetel. I learnt everything about IBS from here. (Gotta love that Heather) I would really suggest buying her IBS - The first year. It references and easily explains why we have the urgency we do. I can't really explain it all that well and would hate to lie to you.

I thought her book was excellent and helped very much to understand what the heck is going on with us LOL

Hope this helps.

hey there
muchos respect to your mum, but i disagree with her. whilst the food that you put in your stomach is not the material coming out of your bum, something in the food is identified when it reaches your tummy...or even just the fact that there is material in your stomach, and if you have an overactive bowel (with respect to its rhythms)....tells your gut to emptyyyyyyyy....it happens to all of us almost...don't worry.

Ashley,

I just want to echo what's been said already. That definitely IS IBS, and the food leaving your body is not the same food you're putting in. (It just feels that way.)

My daily BM always has urgency, by the way. I drink my morning SFS, and away I go. Sometimes the urgency comes halfway through my breakfast (after my SFS), but that's about as late as it comes.

Hi, it has to do with the gastrocolic reflex, when food enters the stomach, it stimulates the colon to start moving, trouble with IBS people is the movement isn't smooth and gentle but spasmodic. There is a really good explanation in Heathers IBS glossary, have a look see

Yep, anything between 5 minutes and two hours after I've eaten and its always sudden. The pain builds... and then the explosion! I usually stay in the restaurant for at least 30-40 mins after dinner because I know I will need to go.

Yep, have to agree here (sorry for the two posts I just found this part about portions). I find that there are lots of things I can eat when I'm stable as long as I don't eat much of them. I even ate half a hamburger with no ill effects two days ago. I was with a friend who also has IBS. She ate the whole hamburger & sure enough, 20 mins later...

Mostly a "C" but occasionally an "A"...urgency is normal! new

I remember taking my daughter out to the Cheesecake Factory and wanted a salad so bad I couldn't stand it so I ordered one. Within 1/2 hour I was near "blow-out" and thank God the bookstore had a potty close by!

I have no doubt that the salad caused things to move...for us "C's"...the blowouts are practically a blessing since we are so compacted most of the time.

You're not imagining things at all...
