My friends drink every weekend and I always abstain from it because Heather says it is not good for IBSers. Well, last night I thought I would give it a try since it has been years since I've drunk any alcohol (or even juice & soda for that matter). I had some midori & pineapple juice mixture, and was feeling fine the entire night. Well, this morning I woke up and had D and cramping. I haven't felt like this in a long time. Must be the alcohol? I didn't even drink much, though, and I felt fine last night.

I didn't eat anything different than what I usually eat yesterday so I'm thinking it must be the alcohol. Can anyone else drink with no problem? Or do you think my problem was with the pineapple juice?

It could be the alcohol. Or the pineapple juice. It could also be what you had right before it - did you drink on an empty stomach? I know that if I drink on an empty stomach, I'm done for. I don't drink often at all, and in fact haven't had a drink in months, but if I'm going to have even a sip of something, I eat some crackers (soluble fiber!) first. And I can't do *anything* with citrus - I usually stick to my glass of chardonnay, if anything.

Hope you get feeling better!

Well, last night for me consisted of, if i remember right, nine beers, four rum n cokes, a pile of excellent vietnamese food, and today am just fine.....damn i'm tired though! Let me just say that i don't normally drink much, only on occasions with friends, such as last nights birthday. It of course used to knock my poor old guts right around the next day, but am really finding that things are really changing for the better with the hypno and fibre.
......oh yeah, and even though i fell into bed at 1am, still managed to put the headphones on, and let my sub- conscious listen to the hypno, cause i sure as hell know the rest of me wasn't tuned in. How's that for diligence!?!

That sounds exactly like what happens to me when I drink sometimes. It's hard to predict when alcohol will make me sick and when it won't, so sometimes I still chance it and drink. But, when I do get sick, I haven't drunk that much, and I go to bed fine. I wake up around 4 am the next morning and spend the morning with d, horrible cramps, and lots of nausea, although I've trained myself pretty well to not actually throw up (lots of concentration).

Generally if I take Immodium and my anti spasmodic plus some anti-nausea medicine and my Nexium I can stop being sick at about eight am and sleep.

Now, it's just not worth it to me to drink very much.

Hi HL,

My daddy always told me: "Drink your booze straight; the sweet stuff makes ya sick!" He was right.

I can have a Jack, even two -- okay, so the other night I had three (we were celebrating). I drink my Jack straight up (ya don't fool around with sour mash!), and as long as I keep it to only one drink (two max!), "and no sweet stuff," I'm fine.

However, there are a few things you have to do: first, take an Equalactin. Second, have some bread or crackers or other soluble fiber BEFORE the drink. Third, have more bread WITH the drink, and fourth, have more AFTER the drink.

For a lot of folks, vodka goes down pretty easy -- don't mix it, though; Stollie on ice is nice. Another good choice would be a DRY martini on the rocks (very little vermouth in it).

I'm not promoting drinking as a good thing; it's not. But for those times when you want to celebrate, or a special occasion, do it smartly, and you should have no problem.

Enjoy!

Bev

the midori sounds just as bad. Isn't midori tart? I haven't had it in years. I don't drink that much anymore maybe once or twice a year the smell reminds me of too many stale alcohol college mornings and walks of shame. Maybe the next time you would like a drink try vodka, whiskey or gin and mix it with soda or tonic (if your gut can take the bubbles)or water and tell the bartender to go light on the liquor.

I know how you feel, except I can't even make it a couple of hours after an alcoholic drink before I get sick. Last weekend we had a girls night and I had ONE cooler and had "D" within an hour! It was awful!

I just don't drink anymore, period. I don't miss it either just because I have to miss a few hours of the "party" because I am tied up in a bathroom that's not mine, where I can't relax. It's just not worth it to be.

I think the midori is a little tart. The bottle said it was a melon liquer.

I think I'll try the vodka next time. I've just been feeling like a party-pooper with my friends every time because I can't drink. They feel so sorry for me because I can never eat what their eating and I can't drink.

I'll let you guys know how I feel when I drink the vodka. Hope that's better.

Thanks everyone!

My IBS gets better & worse. When it's bad I can't even tolerate a sip of alcohol, but other times I drink vodka & ginger ale. Could have been the pinapple juice that caused your problems. I usually avoid all fruit juices when I am out. They have pretty unpredictable effects on me. Midori might not have been the best choice either, I avoid all the flavoured liqueurs and alcopops because they have so many artifical additives in them. I can sometimes manage a small beer but that usually makes me bloated. I can also drink Japanese shochu (not sake - that makes me really sick) but I guess you won't find that unless you go to a Japanese restaurant. Look out for it if you do go though...
My vote's for vodka!!

It seems like all of you have IBS-D because you talk about getting "attacks" of D etc. after drinking. I have IBS-C. I do not notice a direct link between drinking and me feeling worse with the IBS, because I have constant constipation, bloating, and gas. It doesn't seem to change if I drink or not (sometimes drinking helps with the constipation actually). So do IBS-C people have to totally eliminate alcohol?

Ugh... how do you all cope with all of the changes you have to make because of this. I feel like I can't do anything I used to do.

You are going through the mourning stage for your "old life". It does not matter whether you are D or C, drinking can exacerbate your symptoms. How do you know that when you take that drink, that you are not becoming more C with the bloating/gas? You don't have to have D to have a problem with a trigger. Chronic C is just as big an issue, as you well know.

You will have to make changes, if you want to feel better. It is what it is.

Thank you. It is really hard to accept this huge change...

I know that all the triggers should be avoided but it is just so strange to me that I don't feel like any particular food/drink etc. causes me specific problems. Some days I feel relatively ok, somedays I feel bad. It doesn't seem to go with any specific thing I do...

I know, it is difficult. I was C most of my life, and now as a young adult I am A. I still haven't figured it out. And my gas and bloating can be huge. Can you spell blimp? Sometimes, I can pinpoint the cause and sometimes I can't.

Maybe if you try a food journal, (as big a pain as that is), you can start to see a pattern. You just can't connect the dots at this point, so you need a way to figure it out.

Lately, what I have been noticing about myself, is that I get very bloated, tired and headachy after eating wheat. And I mean immediate, so that is telling me something. You really have to be very in-tune with your body.

I feel like stress and my menstrual cycle are much bigger triggers than food. So does that mean I still should follow the IBS diet? Or focus more on hypnosis/relaxation/exercise (which I am already doing- and I ordered the hypnosis cds)

If you read an earlier post of mine you will see that my IBS was triggered by a tragic event in my childhood, not food. However, stress is still my biggest trigger, along with my cycle, but food also plays into it, for whatever reason. If I were you, I would follow the diet, keep a food journal, see what makes you feel good or bad, and follow an exercise/stress reduction program. None of this is going to hurt, but it sure may help.
