Bev,
I just got out of the hospital with a wicked gastro virus (more later, am ok). While I was in there, I was given Donnatal for the cramping pain & when I was released late yesterday afternoon was given a prescription for it. I didn't want to get the prescription filled until I got home & checked out the medication on the message boards first. I couldn't read my doctor's writing & I finally got it at 5 am, yeah me. My inner voice said keep at this. I typed Donnatal in the old IBS search engine & in almost every post, there is your name. I saw where you don't like to take it, so I went out & looked at the side effects & boy howdy I do not want to start taking this drug. When I saw that Donnatal has Phenobarbital in it, I'm like no way. I take enough medications & I do not want to add one that I could get addicted to (I am a former smoker & drinker). Even though if you took me off all my meds I probably be one cranky old B. I guess you could say I have an addictive personality. I would not want to take the risk. I am happy with the meds I take now. The reason for this long winded message is to say thank you very much. Your postings were red warning flags for me to check out the meds & help me make my decision. I will be back later to explain my hospital stay, because I have more questions for everyone? Thanks again.

Wait a sec! If your doc gave you this medication, it's because he thought you needed it. If you decide not to take it, you should discuss it with him first.

Donnatal has some dangerous side effects, but frankly, practically any medication does. My doc wants to put me on cholesterol-reducing meds, but when I discovered that liver damage is a possible side effect, I said "no way!" However, a friend's husband is on the same drug and it's been literally a life-saver for him. So you see, sometimes it's worth taking the risk.

How often did your doc tell you to take the Donnatal? Frankly, it's a Godsend for me to have on hand, "just for emergencies." I ALWAYS keep a supply in my purse, because when I'm out of town and have a sudden attack, believe me it's fantastic to be able to just take one of 'em and have all the cramps disappear within the hour.

I don't take it every day -- never did. I take it only AS NEEDED. I'm happy to say I haven't needed it for several months now. But I have it on hand if I do!

If your doctor didn't tell you to take it every day, then my suggestion would be to keep it on hand in your purse for emergencies, like I do. But if you have cramping that keeps you from functioning, take it -- that's what it's for. And, listen, I've been on this stuff for over 4 years now, and I've had to throw out bottles of it because they've expired on me. That's hardly addictive!

When you were in the hospital and they gave it to you, did it ease the cramping for you?

Daisy, you probably saw me on all the posts about Donnatal because I doubt very many of us take the stuff. Heather prefers her peppermint caps; she says they're more effective than Donnatal. That's GREAT! I tried them, but couldn't tolerate the peppermint, which caused severe heartburn. And so many of us have gotten stable, such that we practically never have cramps anymore. You'll get to that point too.

Bev

Bev,
Thanks. I have read your advice, talked this over with my husband & have come to a decision . I will get the prescription filled & use it for only emergency purposes. I was in the hospital because I had a gastrointestinal virus. My symptoms included vomiting/d with cramping then the d turned all to blood. (The doctors said that the bleeding was from internal hemmeroids; has anybody had this? it was dark red and looked like a tablespoon or two). The cramps were never stronger than mild menstrual cramps. So thanks for bringing me down off my high horse, have a great day.

I'm sorry to hear about your hospital stay. It is really scary to find blood where it does not belong. I recently had a similar experience. After a horrible bout of ibs-d (we're talkin over 20 per day for over a week) I began bleeding rectally. My primary sent me to the er. They diagnosed it as an ulcerated hemmoroid and cauterized it (with no Painkillers! ouch!) Within two days, because my d was no better, I had reopened the wound and was back at the er. That time they decided to treat the d and just put gauze on the hemmoroid. This lovely event began a series of tests - i'm sure you know the drill - colonoscopy, endoscopy, cat scan, upper gi, ultra sound of gallbladder, blood tests and stool sample screenings. Of course they discovered what I've known all along...I have ibs-d!

I hope my tale of woe at least helps you feel like you have a war buddy. I highly recommend B&O suppositories for the rectal pain and spasms. If I didn't have them, I really would have ripped myself a new...

High horse? Gee, when I titled my post, "Whoa!" I had no idea you were on a high horse. Truly. If I came across as someone who was trying to do that, I apologize.

I have a big mouth.

Bev,
What I meant was I get off on these tangents & I need somebody to say whoa, just take a second & think this through & that is what you helped me do. There was absolutely no offense taken.

Wow. What a horrible ordeal for you. This is what makes my story so odd. My ordeal started on this past Mon, Jul 19. I woke up with a mild migraine & slightly nauseated (excuse spelling & grammar, it is 3am & I don't have my glasses on). About 3 that afternoon, after eating a lunch of Chicken Pasta Salad (homemade yummy) which I had for dinner the night before, I had a snack of baked cheese nips & some low fat meringues. I started to have what I thought was a IBS attack. I took Equalactin & finished my cheese nips, because I wanted them:). At this point the vomiting started. On occasions, I have vomited with IBS, it usually happens just once, with this episode I vomited several times. I vomited so much, I felt like I was vomiting food that I was thinking about having. I could not stop, but finally did. I ate a few bites of a French Roll & Peppermint Tea about 530 pm & at about 8pm lost that & then the d began. I was pretty sure this was not IBS. At about midnight was when the bleeding began. I woke my husband up to show him. At this point there was stool with the blood; he said this is normal. At around 2am everything turned to blood, it was bright then turned to dark ruby red. Silly me didn't want to wake my hubby since he had said the first bowl was normal. At 7am I woke him up because I was just plain terrified, because it just wasn't stopping. I was sipping water because my mouth was dry & it was going staight through me. I had to call my doctor's office & have them contact the on-call doctor. The doctor called & I told him what was going on. I told him up front I had IBS & had just had a colonoscopy in Jan & had small internal hemmeroids & he told me to go to the emergerncy room & they would probably admit me. The only reason for the emergency room was because they could do the bloodwork there & get it right back. What is weird about this is of course it did not feel good to vomit or to have d, but I really did not feel bad. I did not feel great, but I wasn't running a fever. The only time I felt any pain was when I ate & then it was the mild menstrual cramps type. My behind did not start hurting until late Wed. I had even commented to my husband how odd that my anal passages weren't sore after all that d. By the way, I did not have any tests done while in the hospital. I am sure that they are checking my stools for different things, but no tests.

I have donnatal tabs on hand and they are in no way addicting to me either. In fact I hate to have to take them because they represent failure to me. (I know, I know, I have to change my outlook )
Just don't worry about them being addictive.
