So...
I've started working out ready to be my sister's bridesmaid in 11 weeks - I know, I know, I've left it a bit late LOL !
At the gym I joined, the owner advised a diet that is high in protein. I told him I was on the ibs diet of plenty of carbs for soluble fiber, and he said that was fine for breakfast but it was best to eat high protein for the rest of the day as it doesn't turn to fat as easily as carbs.
I've decided to carry on as I am for breakfast and lunch, but do you think it would be ok to eat a protein based dinner if I take a soluble fiber supplement first, and just have chicken or fish?
Any advice much appreciated
Sarah

I think that is a bunch of "patooey" but that is just my opinion. Sounds like he's just on the latest bandwagon.

Here is my advice - workout regularly, get at least 30 mins of aerobic exercise 3x a week, plus get in a good weight training regiment (which could involve machines, free weights, or even isometric or yoga or pilates if strength oriented), which tones your body AND builds your resting metabolism, which means you will continue burning calories even at rest.

Then, as for eating, I'd eat exactly as you have been - IBS careful, etc, but start cutting portion sizes. Whatever you're used to having for dinner, cut it by 1/3 or if you think you've been "overeating" (not saying you have just example here) then cut in 1/2. At first it will be a matter of will power, but eventually you will get full on less. Also, drink tons of water and cut our sugary/high calorie drinks.

That's my advice! Burn more calories than you take in, and you can eat basically any combo of food you want. I may have gone overboard with myself on this whole score, but I do know a thing or two about this particular issue.

Good luck, sure you'll look GREAT for the wedding!

Also, meant to add, if possible wait to eat after a workout, your metabolism is still running high and will burn up the calories quicker. And try not to eat late at night, it just sits there - not good for losing weight/toning and definitely not good for IBS, in my opinion.

Probably more than you asked for - sorry!

Thanks Michelle!
I can see his point that food just sits in your stomach in the evenings, but surely that would be the same whatever you eat if you don't workout afterwards.
BTW, I probably do need to cut down on my portion sizes, I sometimes find I'm eating too much just because I'm trying to keep my tummy full. I guess more regular snacking means smaller portions at dinner!
Anyhow, thanks for the advice and have a great week at the beach - I'm very jealous!!

Hi Sarah,
Well...there are no "right or wrong" answers, and while I agree with some of the things that Michelle wrote, I disagree with a couple of things.

While it's true that in order to lose weight you have to expend more calories than you ingest, it's also important to understand which foods promote fat loss, not just weight loss. If you want to look good, weight loss is only part of the equation...body fat is the other part. And in fact, because muscle weighs more than fat, as you do strength training, you may not see the weight loss as dramatically because you're building muscle (which is heavier than fat).

From everything that I've read, and that my trainers and nutritionist have explained to me, protein is very important as it metabolizes differently than carbs and helps to promote fat loss and gain lean muscle mass.

I am not in favor of the Atkins plan where carbs are severely limited, but I think you need to keep carbs in a careful balance with proteins. The advice people have given me is to eat more protein if you're working out.

Having said that, given the importance of carbs to those of us with IBS, you can't stop eating carbs ...nor should you. When I eat my meals, I'm very conscious of eating protein and trying not to overdo on carbs (i.e., I don't eat rice AND bread at the same meal...one carb is enough). That's just what I do as I am continually working to keep my weight off after having lost 30 pounds a year ago, and continuing to lower my percentage of body fat. But I'm also conscious of needing some of those carbs so that my IBS doesn't flare up...so I don't completely skimp on the carbs and soluble fiber.

One other caveat, you should always eat a little something before you workout. A little protein and/or light carbs is important so that as you workout, your body has food in it to metabolize. After your workout, your metabolism is elevated and remains that way for about an hour to an hour-and-a-half so that's a really good time to have a good meal or high powered snack.

Hope this helps...I'm sure you'll do great! 11 weeks is plenty of time to make a big difference in the way you look!

Good luck,
Barb
