Is vinegar an IBS trigger? Would anyone be kind enough to give me some fat free brands of spaghetti sauce and Italian dressing that are compatible with IBS? So many of these products have high fructose corn syrup. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Carina

I don't believe vinegar is a trigger. I don't use commercial salad dressings, so I can't help you there, but I can recommend a tomato sauce: Light Ragu. I've been buying the Tomato & Basil one for a while now, and really like it. It's fat-free and contains no HFCS (in fact, the ingredients are tomato puree, diced tomatoes, onions, sugar, salt, garlic powder, parsley, basil and spices - nothing chemical, either!).

Vinegar is absolutely a trigger for me. I am italian and my family pours vinegar on every salad, fresh veggie, tomato, etc. It ferments in my stomach and increases my reflux so much that I sometimes vomit. Probably more than you needed to know!

Thanks to all for your replies. Actually, this IBS misery is more than I wanted to know! I am grateful to you all, though, for sharing your experiences and expertise. It has been invaluable. I'll try the Ragu Light...I'd so enjoy being able to eat a little Italian! Kindest regards, Carina

Have you ever considered that you may be allergic/sensitive to vinegar? It used to do that same thing to me, it made me really sick. Then my allergist discovered that I'm allergic to it. Since I've stopped eating anything with vinegar (which is a whole boatload of stuff, dang) I've felt much better. Just a thought...
