VISITING makes me sick

I have just returned from visiting my mother-in-law for the weekend.
I am finding it very hard to visit w/folks. My best freind lives a few hrs. away and I really want to spend some time w/her,but I always get C, when I am not at home.
Wondering if others have anything similar. I am trying to see if it is triggered by the actual trip, and or the not being near my own bathroom (plus possibly stress).
It can sometimes even happen if I have company here at my own house. I am realizing that one thing that helps me is to try to stick to an easy going routine, mild activity and quiet relaxing time in the am. It feels like my muscles inside just get tight or won't relax.
Now that I am back home I am paying attenetion to what is different. This morning my tummy muscles were real sore, prob. due to the trip. I wanted to lay low and rest, but went to my exercise class instead. We worked on weight machines today so I just went at it gently. I came home feeling a lot better.
Okay I'll stop rambling.Just wondering about how others experience these things.

Yep. Same here. Only with me, it's the Big D. Although sometimes it's just gas, but it doesn't go away until my guests do.

My "fix" is Equalactin. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I'm not too bad in the mornings, but I avoid late parties at ALL costs! When visiting, food is not my friend.

Ain't this fun?

I get bad bloat- so bad I can't sleep and often get C then I get D at some point in the day. It is worse with family but still bad if I visit friends out of town.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Hi Su,

I know how you feel. I always fret when I have to go visit and especially fly. When I fly it is just one big gigantic anxiety party. Then I have to worry about what to eat at my friends houses. Usually, if we go out it is OK because I can find something on the menu that I can handle. It's when they want to BBQ and have potato salad with lots of onions and baked beans that I begin to worry. Usually I manage somehow by picking at my food and still end up having a good time. I have been known to take crackers & peanut butter and eat those on the sly.... ha ha I always carry tootsie rolls in my purse for emergencies.

We just have to muddle through the best we can.

It's good you went to exercise and came back feeling better.

Same here....usually I go every morning. But when I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago I expected to go my usual time in the morning and found that I couldn't. Even before I was diagnosed with IBS, I found that every time I go away, I can't go for the first couple of days, then after that, I do. I think it is just being uncomfortable because you are not in your own bathroom. I know that's my problem. I wind up unconscientiously tightening up an therfore holding back. After a couple of days, I have to go. I also found that having to go when you are staying with family you are not used to being around makes it harder to go then if you were staying in a hotel with more privacy.

I think it is just a natural thing for a lot of people.

Thanks so much. This is exactly what I am experiencing.
Wish it had an answer.
I guess when I realize that I have to really work at keeping my morning schedule so easy and pat at home so I will go,it makes sense that being somewhere else will make it worse. I just hate the full feeling and lack of relief and worry that has to go along w/leaving home.
I am trying to get myself to get up at least 2 hrs. early when I have to leave my house before noon.Usualy that works if I can be calm and alone.
Sometimes I consider just taking a laxative when I arrive at any place new, knowing what to expect, but that can back fire too.
Guess I'll always be looking for solutions.

Are you able to eat reg. peanut butter crackers? I've been afraid to try peanut butter.
Usually when I have to go to a barbeque I buy a pasta salad mix and use ff mayo and get myself a turkey burger for the grill..LAst time I even cooked it before I went.
Bet if I just sat there and ate crackers folks might get the idea. What about the tootsie rolls? Do you sub those for dessert or just eat them to soothe yourself,or fo r a treat?

For years I could never understand why I got "C" every time I traveled. Of course that was before I knew that I had IBS!

The last time I traveled, I took lots of herbal tea bags to include "Eaters Digest" and Peppermint Tea (by Traditional Medicinals) and I did great. No "C"!

NO it ain't fun.
There are just those times that I need to travel and some when I really want to,but I'm sick of feeling bad whenever. I am trying to figure out if the actual trip triggers some of the problem.
When at home I can go whenever I notice a twinge or cramp(and have to be pretty attentive).Being on the road I can ride for several hrs. before I stop.Plus if it's a longer trip, like the 6 hr. ride to the beach(which we take every couple months) I wonder if just sitting(no exercise) and fighting traffic(can cause that tension response of tightening up)is a major aggrevator to the set up..

Too bad there isn't an advanced method of travel that just puts the car on a track and you can relax and do whatever until you arrive, without the hassle of trucks and 4 lanes of traffic going over 70 miles an hr.
I think if the speed limit is 65,my going 70 is fast enough.Too bad others want to zip in and out at 90.
I have found that listening to a good bk. on tape can be fairly calming to me. Maybe I just need to stop at rest stops an walk a while.
Wouldn't it be nice if they provided small walking tracks or workout rooms or something.
(Yeah dream on Alice.)
I was reading the Eqaulactin package and it sounds like it's mainly for diarrhea. Is that true? Thanks Bev.

Hi Su,

I can eat Peter Pan creamy lightly spread between crackers.
Usually, I eat a couple on the sly before we eat the meal(that I can't eat) so I won't be so hungry.

The BBQ's that are a problem for me are the one where we go to out of town and stay at the people's houses. They usually have everything bought to make and I hate to ask....do you mind, I have to have something special so lets go to the store and buy more stuff!!! I guess that could be done, though. Our friends are very nice and I'm sure they would understand....even though they might think I'm strange.

I carry tootsie rolls as emergency food if I don't eat and get shaky. They are easy to carry in my purse... they are good, too.

I've never heard of "eater's digest". Do you get it at a health food store? Boy if I could find something that worked I'd be so grateful. I did take my peppermint tea w/me this time and draank it all day as I usually do.
