I am a D ibser and although I don't have a lot of dairy, I do seem to tolerate what I do eat of it ok. In fact reg. Yoplait whipped yogert with a banana is one of my staples every day and if I have an attack, it actually seems to make my tummy feel better. Well, up until a year ago, my biggest downfall was a DQ Blizzard every Friday and Sat. night. Had done it for years and although have had tummy problems on and off through out the years, these never caused problems. Well, I began to notice that I'd get cramps and problems on Sat. and Sun. am.s and began to wonder about the ice cream. One of my friends also has ibs and she told me she couldn't do soft icecream. I seem to tolerate hard ice cream from the groc. store, but lately have been too gun shy to even do that. My hubby said maybe it's just DQ and to try a Frostie at Wendy's, but I'm a little nervous to try. (I love soft icecream in case you were wondering
I had a bout with my tummy this am, but think it was the pizza I had last night. Sometimes I can eat pizza, and other times it seems to bother me. For me, there are so many foods that are NOT a constant; sometimes I'm ok with them, other times I'm not. Do any of you have this as well?

Hey! I love ice cream, too. But I gave it up. My Dr. said ice cream stays in your system for 2 days. Ugh! Soy ice cream is not bad at all, give it a try.

Janene,

I'm also a D.

My IBS kinda sneaked up on me, gradually-like. The first thing to bother me was pork. I quit eating it. About 10 years later, it was red meat. I quit that too. Then I noticed fatty foods (like french fries or potato chips) would give me terrible cramps, so I quit them. I was still eating dairy all the time, as well as dark poultry meat, and of course coffee. Pretty soon the dairy started bothering me. I told me GI it didn't, and he said to quit it anyway. I ignored him, but it turns out he was right. After awhile, the dairy started cramping me up, just like the potato chips. I fought it for a long time, still having my beloved pizza, until I finally couldn't tolerate the attacks -- which got worse the more I ate of the stuff. Of course now I wouldn't touch anything dairy, not even if it was the last ingredient on a box of croutons.

I think IBS gets worse (or more intense) as our tummies get more sensitive, and we can tolerate less than we used to.

If it were me, I'd switch over to Soy Dream frozen non-dairy dessert (I am soooo addicted to Mocha Fudge!), and see how my tummy reacts. If you find yourself with a happy tummy, you'll have the answer.

Bev

P.S.: Amy's Soy Cheese frozen pizza ROCKS!

Hi Janene,

I think Dairy Queen soft ice cream is one of the bestest things I have ever tasted. Especially the hot fudge sundae or the choco dipped cone. But, nope, can't do that anymore. I was able to tolerate about 1/4 cup of the DQ Blast (soft yogurt ice cream) with crushed oreo's in it. It was great but I can't find DQ that has the yogurt anymore. Also, I can tolerate about 1/2 cup Hagan Dazs vanilla frozen yogurt ice cream. I can tolerate a little dairy if I take a lactaid pill first. After I lost a lot of weight because I was afraid to eat, the only thing that helped my put the weight back on was a shake made with vanilla yogurt ice cream and lactaid milk.

I understand what you mean about sometimes food is OK and other times it causes an attack. Just one of those crazy things we have to put up with and it is so frustrating.

Same thing with me, I was told several times to give up dairy and sometimes I would for a week but I never really believed I should and always came back to it. But now that I am strictly on Heather's diet I know what it is like to feel good and dairy should have been given up long ago. I am not lactose intolerant -I just can't tolerate dairy. J/K. Seriously giving up everything that is a trigger food and then reintroducing things slowly to see if they bother you is the best way to go. Today I had an icee and just the cold gave me mild D so watch out for that too. Oh yeah and the fat content of a Blizzard is sky high! which is the worst thing for IBS in my opinion. It would be better to have lite ice cream than to have a blizzard. Sorry!

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
