Soy cheese question

Hi, Does it make sense that soy cheese would give me gas, yet I'm able to tolerate all other soy products (i.e., soy milk, soy cream, tofu, soy beans, etc.)?
I noticed that I was bothered by gas the last 2 times I ate soy cheese, and I'm wondering if that was what was causing the gas, or something else that I've yet to identify.
Any ideas?

Lots of soy cheese contains casein, which is a milk protein. Check the label - that may be the culprit.

Hi, Yup...I read the label on the soy cheese, and there it is: "caseinate (milk protein)." That is really misleading since the front of the package states that the cheese is "lactose free" so I assumed there was no dairy in the cheese.
Thanks for helping me discover the problem.
Now my next question: are there soy cheese that don't have casein in them, or do I have to give up cheese forever?? (Say it isn't so!)

Thanks, Mags, for the webpage on soy cheese. It's interesting that Heather likes the cheese with casein in it. (Obviously casein doesn't seem to bother her. Aren't I the lucky one?!)
Oh well...guess I'll look for the totally dairy-free soy cheese and see if I like it.

Here's a thought: Do you think all brands have the same amount of casein? Maybe a different brand with a smaller amount you could digest easier?
I don't know. I just had that idea now. I may be way off here.

Good thought about differing amounts of casein in different brands of soy cheese. It's sure worth a try because I would miss cheese if I had to totally eliminate it from my diet. I have cut way back on the amount of cheese I eat, but I'd hate to have to give it up entirely.

i tried Vegan cheese once... no casein. it was really gross. it might be okay in recipes, though. i tried it on a sandwich and the texture really got to me.

I'm afraid I had the same experience as Beth...the vegan cheese was just TOO WEIRD! It was EXACTLY like the plastic cheese one might find in a child's toy kitchen...ugh. Luckily I can handle SoyaKaas--too bad it's so expensive.

I believe that they add casein to make the soy cheese MELT similar to regular cheese. I'm not sure about brands that don't have casein... but if you use a soy parmisian cheese it shouldn't have it, because it doesn't need to melt. ken

Hi Barb,
Have you tried goats cheese? I know it also contains casein , but believe some people find that it is easier to digest than dairy proteins. It's certainly one of the foods I plan to test myself with. Cheers.

Hi Ian, Thanks for the suggestion re goat cheese. Believe it or not, I had a slice of non-fat cheese yesterday and it didn't bother me like the slice of soy cheese! What a shock! I think I will stay away from eating anymore soy cheese, and stick to the non-fat cheese or try goat cheese per your suggestion.
