Hi, I'm new to this board. I've had IBS (mainly-D) on and off since 1997 and finally got diagnosed 2 years ago. I come from South Wales in the UK but have been in Japan since 1996. I'd love to hear from anyone else in Japan (especially if you're in the Kanto area) to exchange info on food shopping, sympathethic doctors, train stations with the best toilets (!) etc.

i don't think I have seen any people on the boards from japan, but I am jealous! I would like to visit there someday. If you read through Heather's info you will see that asian style foods can be the best for the IBS diet.
In her book she lists things that are IBS safe to pick up at japanese markets-
"Edamame
Amazake rice shakes
Green teas
Mochi (rice cakes)
Seaweed salads
soy ice cream
sushi rolls
seasoned dried squid
instant miso soup (Yum)
soy flavored rice crackers (fat free)"
I haven't had a chance to find and try out an asian markets by me, but I am sure you will have no trouble!
Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the messages & support. Yes it's true, there is a load of IBS friendly food out here - have difficulty reading the labels sometimes though
I will seek out the things you suggest, thanks. Been having a bit of a bad bout over the last few weeks though so for the moment it's just lots of plain white rice, tofu and mangos which all seem to be staying in...
Thanks again - and please say Hi even if you don't live in Japan

Hello!

I'm not in Japan either but I thought I would just say hello and welcome to the message boards!
That's neat that you're living in Japan, I bet it's quite different from England
I'm not sure if there is anyone on here from there, but I hope you find some answers.

Just want to say welcome to the board. I've never been to Japan so I can't help you there. Are you there just temporarily or is that where you are from?

Hi Jayne!
I think you are the first person I've seen on these boards who is in Asia! I lived in China for a total of about 3 years and I have also lived in Thailand. I havn't been back to China in about two years now and I miss it desperately!!! Others have already told you about how great so much of the Japanese food is for our tummies! I buy sushi grade rice at the grocery store here and it's so much better than other kinds! (In China rice was mostly low quality and sometimes even had stones in it, but when I needed a fix I went to a Japanese restaurant, or I splurged and went to more expensive restaunts in the luxury hotels of Beijing)! Also - one thing that I do that I know is good for us, if you can get fennel seeds, put them in your rice cooker with the uncooked rice and water. They will tenderize a bit as the rice cooks and amazingly, I've found the licorice taste not so strong!

Welcome though - and hope you find our advice useful!
