My best friend is getting married in June and I recently started going to the tanning bed. I've been trying to determine if the increased pain I've been experiencing lately is related to this. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know that tanning is bad for other reasons, but could it make my IBS symptoms worse, too?

I admit to tanning, only a month's worth, each spring - to get a head start on summer. I know the other risks and do use lotions, etc, but as for the IBS connection? I find it very relaxing and in that sense helps the IBS symptoms, like lying on a big heating pad and unwinding. But that's just me. Hope you find out what's bothering you!

I agree with Michelle - tanning beds (as I recall from a LONG time ago), are so relaxing. Can't see why they'd aggravate IBS. You could also try self-tanning lotion. I am very fair and sun-shy so I get my color from a bottle. Neutrogena's Self-Tanning foam in Deep is great - as good as the Estee Lauder and Lancome brands I used to use. Its a true tan color and easy to use. You just have to rub it in well, being sure to cover all parts that will be exposed and WASH HANDS afterwards. If you are interested, but nervous, try it on your stomach or somewhere that won't show - it wears off in a week or so. Once warm weather hits, I put it on every morning after my shower. Enjoy the wedding!

I've never done it before but was wondering if it gets rather warm in there. I find that when the weather is hot and sticky my IBS is worse. I read in one of Heather's books that heat is a stress on the body and any stress on the body can cause IBS to flare.

I was thinking the same thing. I have never gone tanning. I just know I don't do well with heat. The summer is the worst time of year for me.

Yes - it actually does get pretty warm in there. Maybe that is what's making me feel worse. I will also try the foam to see how it works on my skin. I hate being so pale, but I hate feeling sick even worse.

Thanks for your help everyone!

Hi, Kris -

Don't want to be a wet blanket but hope the tanning bed is a one-time thing for you. It's not worth the risk, especially when there are so many great self-tanners out there. While I've never used a tanning bed, I'm speaking as one who's had several skin cancers - they leave ugly scars. And that's the best news. I've also lost three (!) friends to melanoma - heartbreaking. Again, sorry for the "wet-blanket". Hope you don't mind.

Blessings,
Kaybee C
