Just wanted to hear any personal stories or advice of anyone who had this test. I am having it on Friday, after the "oh so fun" flexible sigmoidoscopy I had last week didn't show anything abnormal. The breath test is 3 and a half hours of drinking some sugar stuff, then breathing in a bag every 15 minutes. Anyone who has done it please let me know how it is. Thanks.

Is this the test they do for lactose intolerence?

I have not had this done. I do know someone who has and she tested positive. The doctor put her on an antibiotic and then probiotics to put the good flora back in her system.

Good luck,
Leigh

Yes, and they can do a similar test to check for fructose intolerance. Whether you are or are not lactose intolerant, dairy is still an IBS trigger food.

I'm curious also, as I have to have this done on July 19. The day I get back from my honeymoon.

I'm told it is not such a reliable test from some doctors (everyone has an opinion). In any case, for us IBSers, as someone pointed out, we have an intolerance to lactose but are not necessarily lactose intolerant (I know, seems stupid). The lactose irritates our systems but this would not always show up on the test, which I suppose is why some doctors do not consider it to be a reliable tool for IBS patients. In any case, whether you test positive for actual lactose intolerance or not, because you have IBS, it will most likely bother you. Therefore, be prepared to have some discomfort during the procedure. Although you might want to load up on SFS, pep pills, etc. in order to diminish or obliterate the pain you might feel as a result of ingesting all the lactose they give you, I would suggest going in clean as a whistle and without any of your IBS fixes. The reason for this, of course, so that you, yourself, will be able to tell/confirm whether or not lactose bothers your system despite the test perhaps coming back negative.
Good luck!

I am very frustrated...my test came back positive for bacterial overgrowth and my doc wants to try a second antibiotic, and if that doesn't work, a third. If all this doesn't work the last resort she says is a liquid diet for 7-21 days! None of this sounds appealing, and I hate to keep going on antibiotics. I'm just blue
