The jury is still out on this one, but it appears that my problem yesterday and the day before really WAS the muffins. I got up this morning and took my SFS with a glass of water, as usual. I waited an hour, and then had some rice cereal instead of a muffin... and lo and behold, almost 2 hours later, I'm still feelin' fine.

So now I'm left wondering WHY the muffins bothered me. After looking at the recipe, the only guess I'm coming up with - still - is the egg whites. I haven't eaten eggs for about 3 months now, and it's been at least a month since I've had anything else that's contained any amount of egg product. The lone exception I can think of is angel food cake... and although it didn't trigger an attack, I couldn't even finish the slice because I felt so sick eating it.

Is it even possible that such a small amount of something can trigger an attack? Or maybe I'm suddenly allergic? I'm completely baffled by this, mostly because I ate eggs for years with no problems, and egg whites are even IBS-safe.

Anyway, thanks again for all the well-wishes yesterday. I still felt pretty miserable by the time Adam got home from work, but by then we'd figured out that we had a SUPER view of the fireworks from the park across the street, because we live so close to the waterfront. So we sat on a blanket in the park and I got to see my fireworks without having to panic about being so far from home when I was unwell.

Hey Casey,

Happy you got to see the fireworks after all!

It is so frustrating .... I have a hard time figuring out this food thing, too. Sometimes it just doesn't make any sense. Anyway, I think you should definitely stay away from those evil muffins.

Glad you're better

Glad you got to see the fireworks, Casey!!

As the poster child for food sensitivities, I can tell you that they CAN develop out of the blue. Having said that, who knows if it was the egg whites or something else. I can't remember now exactly what type of muffins they were but I think you said they were ginger applesauce? Apples do me in, but who knows.

The angel food cake experience does certainly point to the egg whites, so maybe that's it. Anyway, glad you're feeling better today!

I can tell you that food sensitivities do suddenly occur. I suddenly became allergic last year to yeast, vinegar, malt, and carrots - all of which I'd happily eaten for many, many years. So now I find myself unable to eat bread or any sauces, condiments, or dressings because they all have vinegar in them. Just the tiniest bit of vinegar gives me internal itchings so bad that I just squirm so I have to be very, very careful with that.

Sounds like maybe the egg whites could be your culprit. Maybe you could keep a food diary if you aren't already, it sure helped me discover the carrot allergy - it didn't show up on the blood work and it was only thru the food diary that we discovered it. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Shari

Hi Casey,

You said, "The lone exception I can think of is angel food cake... and although it didn't trigger an attack, I couldn't even finish the slice because I felt so sick eating it." It didn't trigger an attack, yet you felt sick eating it? Is that because you were worried about the egg whites?

What kind of angel food cake was it? I mean, was it a box mix or did you make it from scratch? What are the ingredients on that box mix? That would be suspect.

Egg whites, eh? Interesting.....

The angel food cake incident was... hmm, about a week ago. Well before I had any idea that eggs might bother me. In fact, I had kind of thought that it was just "too sugary" - which didn't make any sense, considering I eat a decent amount of sugar every day, but I didn't now what else to blame. And yeah, no "attack" in that I didn't have D or cramping, just nausea.

I also ate a great big chunk of it the morning of the day I went to visit my mother. I had D that evening, despite eating a very IBS-safe dinner... but that could have been nerves, too, so I'm still not entirely counting that incident.

It was a boxed mix. I don't remember the brand, but I had checked all the labels and made sure I got one that was dairy-derivative-free. I think they all contain egg products, though, don't they? That's kind of an integral part of angel food cake.

I don't know. I still haven't completely ruled out the FiberChoice, only because I still haven't felt 100% yet. I *do* have wicked PMS though, and I want to wait till that's over with to test the SFS... one variable at a time, or I get confused. LOL

Thanks for your reply! Ugh, sorry to hear about your sensitivities and allergies as well... considering carrots are the only vegetable I can always eat safely these days, I think I'd cry if I had to give them up!

I do keep a food diary, in which I note, not only what I eat, but recipe ingredients, mood, hormones, just about anything you can think of. It's a pain, but well worth the trouble, for sure.

Thanks again!

The ginger sweet potato muffins, the recipe is here on the site. So tasty! But if eggs turn out to be the culprit, I'm going to have to throw the rest of this batch out and do some modifying to that recipe, heh.

The only other thing it could be is the sweet potatoes. I still have some, and I haven't gotten brave enough to try those alone yet!

No... the food thing doesn't make any sense to me either. Like I was saying to Bev and Laura, I still haven't completely ruled out other factors, but for now, the muffins are definitely a no-go.

Crazy bodies...
