Hello friends... here's a question that might fall in the "incredibly ignorant" category, but I know you're all patient and kind, so here goes.
When we talk about eating oatmeal, we're talking about rolled oats (like Quaker Oats), not the whole grain cereal like you find in the bulk (pardon the pun) bins at the health food store, right?
Generally speaking, are oats more tolerable that wheat?
Thanks for all the help... Paula

Hi Paula,

No, not "incredibly ignorant" at all; actually, it's a good question.

Yes, all oatmeal is fine. I think the instant kind, though, is not. You might try a search, because I know this was discussed previously, a think a few months ago.

Wheat is a problem for most people with IBS; I'm pleased to say it is not for me, and it's the only kind of bread I ever eat. In fact, as we speak, I'm baking Shanna's incredible banana bread with whole wheat flour and oatmeal. Ooooooh, I wish computers had "smell-o-net"!

I eat the instant oatmeal in packets. I have no problems with it, but I know many people do. So you might just have to try it out. I buy the brown sugar kind, and it is fine! Sometimes the original kind gives me problems because it has 40% iron compared to 20% in the others, but even then I'm usually fine with it.

I'm fine with the packaged Quaker oatmeal to a certain point, but if I eat it too many days in a row it starts to bother me. It's all about finding out what your body can and can't tolerate.

Hi,

I eat Quaker instant oatmeal cinnamon & spice. It agrees with me fine. It is where I get my fiber and it makes me regular. I don't eat many veggies or fruits because they bother me too much. I tried the Quaker regular oatmeal and after a few days of "D" realized it had too much iron. Don't know why they have to add things to our food. I was already taking iron in a supplement and that was just too much iron for me.

I think that you will just have to use trial & error here.
Try some and see what happens. Maybe even just eat half a bowl at first.

I eat 'bulk' oatmeal (organic and regular) from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. I prefer bulk because you can't get less processed than that (unless you're sowing the oats yourself!). Like most others wrote, it's all about trial and error...good luck!
