I sometimes get really bad pains right in the area like where my diaphragm is and my ribs separate. It happens at night and it is bad, I am doubled over and can't breathe. Is this from IBS?

Could be. Also could be GERD also known as heartburn or acid indigestion. But also could be other things, so can you get to a doctor to ask? Might be a good idea.

My daughter-in-law has Costochronditis (sp?) and she has pains around her ribcage and sometimes radiates to her back. It even hurts when she breathes. You might have that....but don't know. It's not serious and usually just take tylenol and try to rest. Sometimes it is brought on by stress. Or it could just be trapped gas. It it keeps up maybe you should see a doc.

When I first had a problem with gallstones, the pain started dead center under my ribcage, right where you described, and radiated around to my back. And yes, it took my breath away. That said, it could be gas - I occasionally get odd little pains in strange places. If it keeps up, definitely see your doctor!

Barbie, I'm just curious, what's Costochronditis? I've never heard of that.

I also get pains around my ribcage sometimes... I've had some for the past couple of days as a matter of fact. But your sounds worse than what I get. It's probably IBS but I'd certainly ask your doc just to be sure.

Here is a site with some info on Costochronditis.

It probably isn't what you have but take a look anyway. When my daughter-in-law gets the symptoms it lasts several days and gradually goes away. Taking tylenol and heating pad helps her. For some reason she gets it sometimes when she has been driving on a long trip.. Maybe the muscles involved in holding the steering wheel for a long period of time and the posture when driving could stress those muscles.
