Probiotic question for Bevrs (or anyone who knows)

bev,
You said to take a probiotic on an empty stomach, but I never have a completely empty stomach! I split all my daily requirements up through out the day so I never go too long between eating. I tend to be hypoglycemic, and I get really irritable, dizzy, and fatigued when I go too long without food.
I take fiber first thing in the morning, and right before bed at night. I couldn't take it with that, could I?
I tend to eat later at night, because I always have such a hectic schedule, I usually don't get home til 8:00 or 9:00 at night, after leaving at 7:45 in the morning!
Are there a certain number of hours I would be safe waiting? I may be able to squeeze it in during the day. Does it matter if I take it at varied times? (I think you already answered that, I am not sure)

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions!

Hi Sheri,

I am no expert but I take VSL#3 which is a live probiotic with 450 billion good bacteria per dose. The instructions are to take it with applesauce or yogurt.

I have always had mine with applesauce usually after a breakfast of Rice Chex w/ soy milk.

I'm with you too about my stomach pretty much always having food in it. I usually eat 5 - 6 times a day (small amts.) So I don't think my stomach is ever empty except first thing in the morning.

Hi Sheri,

I take my probiotic at midnight. My tummy is pretty much its emptyist then. Sound strange? Not so much. I always get up to go pee in the middle of the night -- ALWAYS. So I keep 2 capsules next to my water glass on my nightstand. Then, when I stumble out of bed at midnight, go pee, come back, take a sip of water, I pop my Jarro.

Don't you get up in the middle of the night too?

Bev

Of course I do! Well, it depends. Either I am up like five or six times to pee, or I can make it through the night. I have been trying to get the bulk of my water in earlier in the day to avoid this, but maybe I'll drink up more before bed to ensure I do, or set my alarm until I can get myself in the habit. I take acacia at ten oclock, I guess that's enough time, but maybe I'll start taking it alittle earlier to make sure. I still need to buy the jarro, just doing homework first.
I can't beleive my frequent urination could come in handy for something!
I barely make it through an hour or two at work with out peeing. My boyfriend says that I have the bladder of a squirrel.
I used to have such a horrible time on road trips in the past, I would starve myself for the IBS, and dehydrate myself for the bladder!

The only thing that worries me about that is that I put acacia in my breakfast every morning, I don't know if it would bind to the probiotic and I would "get rid" of it twenty minutes later. Applesauce and yogurt, hmmm... I usually have one or the othre for a snack during the day!

A SFS Suggestion new

Sheri, why don't you take your Acacia before dinner instead of so late at night? I think most of us take it first thing in the morning and again just before dinner -- don't we?

Just a suggestion, but it kinda makes sense to have the SFS in your tummy before eating, as a "cushion."

And, hey, if you can sleep all nite long without having to pee, you go girl! I don't know why I get up all night long, but it irritates me because sometimes I can't get back to sleep. Once my mind starts working, I'm up! So I have to quickly run to the pot, do my business, quickly wash my hands (very fast because the cold water wakes me up), and quickly run back to bed -- all the while half asleep. And then do that every 2 hours! ARGH!

On the other hand, I do like taking my probiotic in the middle of the night. So, what the hey, quit my complainin', eh?

Later --
Bev

Hey Sis Bev,

I get up at night, too, but usually only about 1 or 2 times. Even so, I know how you feel about not getting back to sleep. Usually I can but when I can't my mind starts racing about anything and everything possible that I could worry about. Before you know it I am planning for a hurricane or worried about what if the car won't start??? I know, its goofy but my mind works that way.

Have you tried cutting down on liquids before bedtime?
Except for Jack, of course! What about using wet wipes or waterless hand cleaner instead of washing your hands in cold water? I am just giving some big sister advice here.

You know, I just LOVE having you on Board here, Sis! You're THE BEST!

Yeah, it's like that. Nature calls, so I stumble out of bed to the loo -- and I have to hurry back to bed because my mind will start to work. It's like, "Uh-oh, I don't think the blueberry pie poster will fit on that wall near the toilet; I'll have to hang the what-not shelf there instead." And before I know it, I'm wide awake, wondering where I packed the stupid what-not shelf! ARGH!

No, I'm not getting enough sleep. However, sometimes in the afternoon, after painting a wall or two in this little condo, moving the furniture all back into place, and taking a shower, I'll curl up in the recliner and fall fast asleep.

Hand sanitizer! Why didn't I think of that? We have a pump bottle on the bathroom shelf! DOH.

Thanks, Sis. How did I manage before you came on Board?!

Smooches!

Sounds like an overactive bladder keeping you up?? IBS and O.A.B. can run together. My urologist put me on Detrol LA. Oh my! I forgot how sweet it was to sleep through the whole night without getting up to pee 5 or 6 times. I noticed a difference the first day of taking it! I went out and ran errands, and I was gone 3 hours, and never once stopped to pee. I was so excited I almost cried!!

Detrol is not a lifetime drug. You take it 3 to 6 months and it just helps you to retrain your bladder. I'd like to kiss the feet of the folks who made that drug.

Hi Bev,
I get up several times a night as well - I don't know how old you are, but I am over 50 and it's just what we do. Anyway, I take Melatonin before bed, and I never have any trouble getting right back to sleep anymore. It's great and it's natural. Try it.

I can totally relate to the little mental hamster starting up in his wheel in the middle of the night! I purposely try to stay focused on how sleepy I am and try not to allow any thoughts to creep in and ruin things in the 90 seconds it takes to go and come back to bed (like they did last night).

Last night's oh-so-important sleep-ruiner: Should I get an indoor or indoor/outdoor cat?
