I was just diagnosed in January but I have had IBS for the last seven years. When my doctor diagnosed me sent me home with a prescription for colace and Zelnorm and told to use Metamucil three times a day. Other than that, she said there wasn't much else to do. Needless to say it was a gift from God when I stumbled across this site and found out about Heather's books. The Zelnorm worked with the pain but the constipation never seemed to ease up. I have gone a week without any bowel movements. I bought the hypnosis cds and am at day 14 now and I feel somewhat discouraged. Not only am I in pain but now it seems that my body may be addicted to the colace. I don't know how to go without it. I try for a week and then I get scared as extreme pains return. I feel that because I am so stressed and focused on this, my family suffers, especially my 5 yr old daughter, as all I want to do is lie in bed. Does anyone else "pretend" to be okay all the the time. I feel like I have to put on a show because people don't understand the pain.

Oliver, you said you have Heather's books, but are you following the program?

I'm a D, not a C, so I don't know if I can help you much, but I'm going to try.

Unfortunately, I also don't know anything about Colace, but if your doctor prescribed it for you, and you don't like it, you should go back to your doctor and tell her you'd like to get off it but are having problems doing so.

I don't know about that Metamucil stuff. There have been past posts about it, I know, so you might do a search to see what others have to say about it. I don't think too many of us take it. Most take Heather's Acacia, Benefiber, or Citrucel powder. I've tried them all, including Fibercon capsules (which didn't do anything, obviously). You might consider switching brands.

Are you taking in any insoluble fibers at all? ANY fruit or veggies? What about a nice bowl of fresh vegetable soup with some solubles, like French bread or plain saltines? How about a fruit smoothie with blueberries? (Blueberries REALLY make me poop!)

Do I "pretend" to be okay? No. But I don't have children to care for, so it's different for me. Don't compare yourself with others; everyone's personal life situation is different. I had a bad time of it before I came on Board here, so I know how frustrating it is. My story is different from yours, but nevertheless I was full of anxiety to the point where I was completely home-bound. I couldn't go anywhere because of my constant D. Michael's program rid me of it completely (not the D, but the anxiety; the D I worked on myself). I got stable, and so can you. It takes time, trial-and-error, and extreme patience. If something you're taking doesn't work for you, try something else. (Of course, if it's a prescription, see your doctor first.)

Unfortunately, too many doctors, once they give you "The" diagnosis, hand you a packet of Citrucel and show you the door. It's frustrating for all of us -- that's why we're here, to find out what works for others and what doesn't. Now I understand doctors are referring their patients to this website, and that's extremely encouraging for all of us.

I hope some of my suggestions have helped.

Bev

Just to add on what Bev said, look at this part of the site. It explains soluble fiber and insoluble fiber and how it works. I hope it helps. You may need to add more of one or the other to ease the constipation. Tons of water helps, too. Also exercising - even a 5 minute walk after a meal helps. web page
