Hello I know Heather has explained why MILK (yes, as in dairy and not soy) is not tolerated by is IBSers but I just cannot give it up. I've cracked alcohol, coffee, fat and have got the hang of the insoluble lot but I just can't replace 'normal' milk with soya. For one thing, my stomach hates soya milk and I get terrible gas from it. I find that dairy milk (or goats), heated and spiced up with cinnamon, ginger and cardamom an hour after a good oatcake biscuit breakfast goes down ok. My only symptoms at the moment are occasional gas and I have one loosish stool per day (and ONLY one in the morning). Do I REALLY have to give it up????? Does anyone else drink it? I used to drink litres of the stuff and a mug of hot milk has always been my comfort food. Anyone else out there a milk fan? (please!!).

Hmmm. Nope I'm not a milk fan - it makes me too ill so I haven't drank it for years (tho I ate milk products for a while).
But when I first started on soy milk I hated it. Really and truly. And now you couldn't make me drink cow's milk for anything.
The trick is to start slow and to remind yourself that you're drinking the stuff cos it's better for you, NOT because you're supossed to like the taste. But you will. I don't get how I drank gallons of dairy milk now - it smells so gross (I think all dairy milk smells "off" now).
Try starting off with flavoured soy milk - I love choclate or strawberry and always remeber that plain, un-sweetened soy milk can be pretty grim (even to a convert like me).
But it REALLY is worth it, I promise. And it's so good for you without thinking bout IBS.

I don't like the soy milk either but I'm just fine with RiceDream Vanilla, its great on cereal and the chocolate flavor is yummy to drink, just not as thick as regular milk!

Nope, sorry. I don't drink milk anymore. My gut can't tolerate it. It would give me the worst gas, bloating, cramps, and yes the dreaded D!
I wouldn't give it up for the longest time, insisting that it didn't bother me and ignoring my GI's strong recommendation to lose the stuff (I love cheese!). But when Heather spoke, I finally listened. She was right. As soon as I gave it up, I got better. Now I wouldn't dare go near the stuff.
Silk soy milk is incredible. The chocolate version makes the most unbelievable hot cocoa you've ever tasted! And Soy Dream Mocha Fudge non-dairy frozen dessert is THE BEST. Soy parmesan is fab! Frozen soy cheese pizza is to die for. I even use soy "butter" (Soy Garden); it tastes more like real butter than anything I've ever had.
No, I'm sorry, I'm off dairy forever. Thank God!

I agree, I felt much better after I stopped Milk. I still don't like Soy or Rice Milk that much but in recipes it's okay. It's worth it to avoid all the gas the dairy was causing me. But the choice is still yours but you might want to see how good you'll feel without any dairy for a while then you can decide.

Claire, I'll confess. I still drink Lactaid fat free milk (that's the lactose free brand here). I don't recommend it to others as perhaps I have a milder case of IBS. But it settles fine for me. I have about 16 oz a day always with soluble fiber and after a soluble fiber supplement, and I've been D free for over 4 months now.
I think the key is to listen to your body. It will tell you if you're okay or if you're in denial. But as I said, I DO NOT recommend that other people drink milk just because I seem to be able to get away with it. Heather is right, in general soy or rice milk are MUCH safer for MOST people.

I've tried Lactaid milk and can get away with it too, but force myself to buy rice milk instead. I do cheat, I have to admit, but only with a little FF cottage cheese, now and then, or a sprinkle of parmesean cheese on something.......like my homemade pizza made with GF crust.
Other than that..........LS is right, listen to your body......it will tell you what it can handle and what it can't...........but if you are having severe attacks, stay away from the stuff period...you need to stablize.

It's not milk itself that's a hard one for me - I never drank alot of the stuff to begin with. It's the cheese! I LOVE cheese and it's so hard for me to be as sparing as I should with it. Soy cheese is NOT the same. It doesn't melt very well and the texture is all wrong - they can also never quite get the flavor right either in sharp cheddar - my favorite cheese! It often gives me a tummy ache - but lots of things give me a tummy ache! I try to be sparing, but I think this will always be a cheat for me. Ice cream is a big one too - but I can deal with sorbet when the dairy is getting to me. For those who are looking for milk alternatives, when I lived in China and couldn't get milk (Chinese people don't drink it except powdered and that's all wrong) we used almond milk for some things and rice milk works as well. The sweetened products are better than the plain - which tend to have horrible aftertaste. Good luck. Min

Amen. If you can do the dairy, lucky you! Heather's just pointing out triggers for most people. But we're all slightly different with slightly different triggers. Luckily there's no IBS diet police to follow us around when we cheat! (I'd be SO screwed!)

ROTFLMBO! Or I would be if I wasn't at work!
They'd have arrested me at lunch-time. I had risotto (instead of my usualy safe pasta), knowing it probably had some cheese in it. And it was soooo lovely, but I feel rather crappy now. Ah well. It was all my own fault.
