Has anyone else tried taking fish oil pills and had a bad reaction to them? I have been reading up on the Omega-3 (fish oil) pills and have read that not only are they good for the heart and cholesterol but also good for the intestinal tract. There recommened to some patients with Chrohns disease. Well my fiance has been taking them for awhile and feels the best he's felt in the longest time (he has high blood pressure), so I took one yesterday morning. Well about 10 minutes later I got this bad cramping then the diarhea. I attempted to make it to work but only got about 5 minutes from home and had to turn back because the symptoms came back. So yesterday I called in sick from work and spent the day on the couch. I kept have these god awful burps that tasted like salmon (gross!). Luckily today I'm fine and back to what I've come to accept as normal. But I was coureous if anyone else had the same thing happen?

I take 2 fish oil pills in the morning with my multivitamin and acacia, and I don't have any problem with them even though I am a prototypical IBS picky eater. My iron-stomached husband, however, got a really nasty taste in his mouth and fishy burps when he's tried any variety of fish oil capsules. And he will eat all sorts of fatty meat and cheese with no problems at all!

Weird, huh? From this small sample, I would say that there are people who have bad reactions to fish oil capsules, but it's not necessarily an IBS thing.

Hi Janice,

Yes, I had indigestion and "gross" burping from fish oil capsules. Did not have any stomach problems, though. The burping was enough for me to stop taking them. My husband takes them and he has no problems...then again he can eat anything, too.
I am really curious because I would like to find one that I could take since I know they are very good for you.

Nope. That hasn't happened to me. I've taken almost an entire bottle and am ready to go for my second bottle. I take 6 capsules a day.

I have high cholesterol, and this stuff is going to "cure" me! Or I'm gonna die trying.

Have you ever heard of Dr. Dean Ornish? He's THE WORD on women's heart health and Clinical Professor of Medicine at U.C.S.F., also an attending physician at the California Pacific Medical Center. He's the best-selling author of several books about women's heart health and reversing heart disease. This is what he says about flax seed oil:

Quote:

Flax seed oil contains one of the richest sources of omega fatty acids, far more than fish oils. Some of the fatty acids in flax seed oil (omega 3 - ALA, omega 6 - LA, omega 9 - OA) have been shown to help prevent and reverse plaque and heart attack risk.

Women have no problem with taking 3-4 grams a day of flax seed oil. For men, however, the issue is not quite as clear. In December, 1998, it was announced at an Ornish residential retreat that some recent research findings indicate that it may raise the risk of prostate cancer in some men. No additional risk is known for women. Males should understand this potential risk when deciding to take flax seed oil.

Much as we want a definitive answer, at this point the jury is still out on the risks versus the benefits of flax seed oil for men. For women, however, flax seed oil does appear to provide potential benefits without additional risk.

Like your fiance, I also have high blood pressure. I've reduced it drastically, but I attribute that to the blood pressure medication I'm taking rather than the flax seed oil.

Janice, I'd really look at what else you had besides the fish oil that might have caused your attack. I too am a "D" and I had a surprising attack yesterday that I couldn't attribute to anything I had eaten. I figured it was all about self-induced stress, which I thought I had gotten over but apparently have not. Damn.

Anyway, do you get attacks from salmon? If not, I'd give the flax seed oil another chance. I'll bet there was something else going on with you yesterday.

Good luck, and hope you're better soon,

Bev

The Dietician that I see suggested that I mix the flax seed oil with the honeymustard that I use on my sandwich. To say the least it was kind of gross and I didn't stick with it. I will try the flax seed oil pills and let you know.

As far as fish in general, I can eat any kind of fish and be fine. I do find that Salmon tends to sit a little heavier then most of the fish but I'm never that bothered from it.

The only different thing I did was I took my Citrucel before I ate my cereal instead of after.

Sounds like a dumb question, but I can only get away with it if I take it with a meal that has plenty of suluble fiber and very little fat. But I have to say that flax seed oil is easier on me than fish oil, maybe try that?

Yes, I've had the "fishy" burping! Gross!! I stopped taking the fish oil (I've got this huge container left, alas). Glad to know I wasn't the only one having this reaction.

Yes I did. I had drunk my Citrucel before I ate my cereal (Berry Kix) then I took the fish oil pill along with my calcium pill that I take everyday. I think it had to be the fish oil pill. I will try the Flax Seed oil pills instead.

Thanks

I had to give up the fish oil tabs. Gassy crampy reaction plus burping up that fishy taste all day. Flax does the same thing to me.

I take a complex supplement that has fish, flax and CLA in it. Nothing but benefits. I haven't noticed any gross fishy burping.

Hey - if they're good for nails maybe they're good for hair too! I could use thicker hair!

It's good for your skin too. I have bumpy skin on my upper arms and legs (keratosis pilaris, to be technical). The more fish oil I get in my diet, the smoother my skin gets! It's not so dramatic and wonderful that I'd take it if I was burping fishiness all day, but it is nice.

Also, my doctor was happy I was taking the capsules because they're good for the heart.

I have that skin problem too! When I take flaxseed oil, it doesn't help it, but it does make my skin feel very soft AND gets rid of my zits I used to take a tablespoon of the oil everyday, but I haven't in so long...I think I should just get the pills, I think I'd be more likely to actually take them. How many pills do you guys take a day?

I take the omega 3 complex with fish oil, borage and flax and it helps me go to the bathroom..I am IBS-C. I used to take fish oil and it had the same effect on me. But if you are IBS-D, I am not sure that would be a good thing. Good luck! I recently tried evening primrose oil (for PMS and IBS related PMS) and it upset my stomach with gas really bad. I am sticking with the omega 3.

I'm also a C. I had thought that the fat in the oil would be a "no no" but it sounds like it certainly works for you! Do you know what it actually does in your body to help creat a BM? Are you also taking a fibre supplement?

Thanks!

How many do I take in a day? I try to take 6, but it's usually more like 4. There are 1,000 mg. in each. According to Dr. Dean Ornish, 6,000 mg./day is very beneficial to reduce cholesterol, and that's my aim.

I buy Flora Flax-O-Mega at the health food store, 1 jar of 180 capsules = $14.25. web page

As for the skin, I've never had a zit, ever. It's all because of my genetic problem -- but that's another story. Softer skin? Maybe. But to me, the capsules are the only way to go. To drink the stuff, BLEAACCCH!

lol yes I agree, the oil straight up so totally disgusting! I would just hold my nose and take it, and immediatly drink something sweet. But seems like it would just be easier to take the pills. One thing that bothers me...they say you should refridgorate the oil, so shouldn't you have to do the same with the pills? If so, why are all the flaxseed oil pills at the store not in the fridge?

If the flax seed oil capsules in the store are NOT refrigerated, DO NOT BUY THEM! They're rancid.

Flax seed oil MUST be refrigerated! Absolutely.

To quote Dr. Dean Ornish (I love this guy!):

Quote:

One teaspoon of the oil, a tablespoon of the seeds, or 3 to 4 one-gram capsules provide the recommended dosage. The oil should be kept refrigerated (AND BOUGHT ONLY WHERE IT IS REFRIGERATED). The oil, extracted or in the seeds, loses its beneficial effects when heated over 120 degrees.

(Emphasis added.)

Health food stores know to refrigerate them. You'll find it there in the refrigerator, not on the shelves. Why other stores don't refrigerate them, I assume, is because they just don't know any better. I would think customer complaints of rancidity would be a pretty good teacher though.....

Hello,

glad you've started on the subject of fish oil. I'm a type A-IBS (alternate C and D). I haven't been able to clearly identify my trigger foods yet, except fish oil which proves to be one of them. I tried it at two separate times. Almost from the 1st day, I get stronger IBS attacks (a lot of bloating, cramps, constipation, and it doesn't want to calm down at all of the day). After a few days, it gets worse, with nausea, urgency, flushes as if about to faint. At that point I give up the product, and I never know how much good the Omega-3 could do to me ...
However, I'm vegetarian since I was conceived, and I suspect my guts don't agree too much with the novelty of fish oil. There are other vegetarian sources for Omega-3, which I haven't tried yet (hamper seeds etc). Might be worth looking into.
Also just discovered this natural product from a Swiss lab, which sounds marvellous.

Thanks guys for sharing your words. Alone with IBS in my little world, I felt tearful reading your messages. Glad to see we're not alone, and that info + help is available, while doctors prove to be utterly hopeless to deal with the needed support (here in the UK anyway).

Take care!
