If the flax seed oil capsules in the store are NOT refrigerated, DO NOT BUY THEM! They're rancid.
Flax seed oil MUST be refrigerated! Absolutely.

How come every type I've seen is just on a shelf? Stores really should know better then that!

To quote Dr. Dean Ornish (I love this guy!):
Quote:
One teaspoon of the oil, a tablespoon of the seeds, or 3 to 4 one-gram capsules provide the recommended dosage. The oil should be kept refrigerated (AND BOUGHT ONLY WHERE IT IS REFRIGERATED). The oil, extracted or in the seeds, loses its beneficial effects when heated over 120 degrees.
(Emphasis added.)
Health food stores know to refrigerate them. You'll find it there in the refrigerator, not on the shelves. Why other stores don't refrigerate them, I assume, is because they just don't know any better. I would think customer complaints of rancidity would be a pretty good teacher though.....

Hello,
glad you've started on the subject of fish oil. I'm a type A-IBS (alternate C and D). I haven't been able to clearly identify my trigger foods yet, except fish oil which proves to be one of them. I tried it at two separate times. Almost from the 1st day, I get stronger IBS attacks (a lot of bloating, cramps, constipation, and it doesn't want to calm down at all of the day). After a few days, it gets worse, with nausea, urgency, flushes as if about to faint. At that point I give up the product, and I never know how much good the Omega-3 could do to me ... However, I'm vegetarian since I was conceived, and I suspect my guts don't agree too much with the novelty of fish oil. There are other vegetarian sources for Omega-3, which I haven't tried yet (hamper seeds etc). Might be worth looking into. Also just discovered this natural product from a Swiss lab, which sounds marvellous.
Thanks guys for sharing your words. Alone with IBS in my little world, I felt tearful reading your messages. Glad to see we're not alone, and that info + help is available, while doctors prove to be utterly hopeless to deal with the needed support (here in the UK anyway).
Take care!
