Hey! I've been noticing that a lot of people are on antispasmodics or antidepressants and thought "hey maybe i should try this?". Question is...not sure what the difference is and what kinds maybe i should suggest to my doctor? I've found that going to my doctor and just asking if i could try something to help my IBS-D, she doesn't really suggest anything(oh and i've been on dicetel and buscupon, if thats how you spelled them). I really want to bring some info with me and ask her striaght out whether i should try these meds. If they don't work for me then fine but i'd rather go on knowing that i at least tried. I did a search but couldn't find anything to answer my questions so hopefully you guys can help me! Thanks all! Jules

Hello!

I'll try and give you some information about different types of meds.

The anti-spasmodics work to calm down the stomach muscles and hopefully ease cramping and D. The buscopan is an anti-spasmodic, don't know how it worked for you, I tried it and it didn't do anything for me. Generally speaking, you just take anti-spasmodics as needed, when you're having an attack and are in pain. Heather's peppermint caps are supposed to be excellent as an anti-spasmodic and I've found peppermint tea helps my stomach more than the buscopan did.

Anti-depressants are a daily drug that work to treat anxiety and depression. They are often also helpful in treating IBS. I believe that's for a few reasons. One being that IBS is generally aggravated by stress and anxiety, and anti-depressants can help ease those problems. Also, there is a sort-of second brain in your gut and there is some speculation that the anti-depressants work on the chemicals in your gut just like they do in your brain, and help calm the stomach. From personal experience, I can tell you that I used to be on Paxil and it definately helped my stomach. The problem is, anti-depressants can have a lot of side effects, so there is a lot of trial and error involved in choosing the right one.

Finally, you mentioned you had tried Dicetel? (A fellow Canadian eh?). Dicetel is an anti-cholergenic, and to be honest, I still don't quite understand what it does, but I found a description of a medical website I'll post here:

"Pinaverium is a calcium antagonist which inhibits the calcium influx by blocking the voltage-dependent calcium channel at the smooth muscle cell level. It possesses a high degree of selectivity for the intestinal smooth muscle.

Many studies showed that pinaverium induces a relaxation of the gastrointestinal and the biliary tracts and mainly of the colon, an inhibition of the motor colonic response to food and/or pharmacological stimulations, implying the action of the drug in irritable bowel syndrome."

I have been told that you have to take Dicetel on a daily basis in order for it to be effective. I've been on it for over a month and so far haven't noticed it really doing anything for me. I know Kimm on this board tried Dicetel and switched to something called Modulon which I believe she said has helped her more, maybe she can give you some more info on that.

Hope that helps!
Kelly

Hey there....

Yes I did try Dicetel and it didn't work for me at all...my doctor told me it could take up to a couple months for it to work but I really saw no results at all.

I then switched to Modulon. It's like Dicetel in that you have to take it 3 times/day with meals. I was taking 100mg of Dicetel 3 times/day but with the Modulon I'm taking 200mg 3 times/day.

My doc told me that if I didn't see results with it within a month then to stop taking it. Well I took it for 2-3 weeks and then started to see some major improvement!! I still get the occassional bad tummy day where I'm grumbly and gassy but other than that...I have not felt this great in years!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll keep working for me cuz I hear that sometimes antispasmodics will stop working after a while.

Anyway....good luck finding something that works for you and keep us posted on how you're doing!!

Hi Jules,

This is what I take: Bev's Meds

I used to take Wellbutrin, an antidepressant, but it caused tummy cramps, so my doc and I decided to stop it. I haven't missed it. (It did nothing for my IBS.)

If you can tolerate peppermint without any indigestion, I'd give serious thought to ordering the caps from Heather. Also, Equalactin is a MUST. You'll see many posts in here from everyone who raves about it. I'm its biggest fan. You can't get it in Canada I don't think, but you can order it online: Equalactin

Good luck,
Bev

I'm on both, just coincidently. I've been on a maintenance dose of Effexor for a while to keep me depression-free. It helped my tummy a little at first, but was still having lots of D. My internist diagnosed the IBS, started me with just a fiber supplement, and when that wasn't enough to control it, prescribed an antispasmodic called Bentyl (generic name dicyclomine) to use as needed, then when that wasn't enough, had me start taking the Bentyl everyday as a preventive. That worked and I'm now D-free for FOUR MONTHS!! Thanks to Heather's diet too of course.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for giving me that info! It's definitely goin to make me feel better going to the doctor with some info that i can just show her and maybe try different things to see if any of them help. I started takin the peppermint caps and drinking the tea but then i got acid reflux and can't have that anymore. I actually had a pepp. tea this morning cause i had a bad stomach morning with D but then fought all day with the acid reflux even after taking my pantoloc so that wasn't too fun. Guess i'll just stick with my chamomile tea! I've also been thinkin about the anti-deppresant cause for the last almost year i've kinda felt like i've been in a bubble and everyone around me is having all this fun and i'm just not. Dunno if its cause of not feeling good but even when i am feeling alright i'm always worried that i'm going to have an attack. I don't get worked up over it really anymore i just think if i get to excited and happy its gona make my stomach hurt cause its really sensitive to my emotions and then is it really worth it. But i really do miss having fun and acting crazy like a normal 18 year old should. I'm always being told that i'm so much more mature then my age but i honestly don't think that is ALWAYs a good thing. I dunno...i'm just writing what i'm thinking at the moment...maybe i should do this more and let it all out. we'll maybe i should look into a diary cause this rambling could get kind of annoying Okay i'll finish this off! Thanks everyone and jus keep on listing those meds and what they are for and i'm going to make myself a little list of all of them! JULES
