Im confused!
I can eat cheese, drink milk, eat bread, and many of the things lots of people cant with chronic ibs. Im starting to think that my sometimes D sometimes C is all to do with my panic and anxiety attacks.. a nervous tummy.not related to food at all???
I only thought it colud be ibs as it started when i stopped my SSRI antidepressants for panic attacks. I went to my doctor yesterday and hes put me back on them. so maybe il b a little more relaxed.
Although all this new theory ive found doesnt answer why once in a blue moon, every 8-12 weeks i get awful stomach cramps very intense low abdomen and have D for a few hours, then im C for few days. Could this just be a normal thing that happens every now and again?!
i dont know what ive got wrong with me now!?

Hi! Have you read this page about the symptoms for IBS http://www.helpforibs.com/footer/rome_guidelines.asp and have you had tests done by your doctor for IBS? Sound like you may have IBS with alternating D and C. Some people have dominate "c" or "d" and others have the symptoms alternating. Are your bowel movements "normal" most of the time?

you say you can eat milk, cheese, etc. i wonder about that. if you are flaring from time to time, then it's possible you do have IBS. if that's the case, then you should eliminate these foods whether you think you can tolerate them or not. try that for a few months and see if your episodes disappear. remember, the reason for eliminating these dairy products aren't because we are lactose intolerant, though some of us may be, but because these items are GI irritants. that means they can cause problems when your system is unstable. i can eat cheese and have a yogurt, too, and many days there's no problem. however, when my system is unstable, these things send me right to the bathroom. i eliminate them all the time so that i don't have to be surprised by an attack.

have you had all of the tests to eliminate other things? did your doctor definitively diagnose IBS?

certainly, if you have IBS even mildly, your anxiety can be having a strong impact. you may notice and improvement now that you're back on your meds. anxiety is stress, and stress is an IBS trigger.

hope you are well, soon.

Hi
Well, ive not had any internal examinations. but my doctor has prescripbed me Antispasmodic drugs to take before i eat, after i gave him my symptoms.
My history includes 6years of panic attacks and anxiety, and the ibs is new. Some days i have what i would call "normal bowel function". other days im "loose".. and sometimes i cant go at all! but theres no pattern. i could eat exactly the same thing over a few days and my bowel would produce something different everyday!
This is whats making me think that i trigger the changes myself by causing the "upset" by stress from anxiety?
If i go to the toilet and im having a bad day, "loose movements".. i tend to find myself having a panic attack.. and it becomes worse. If i didnt panic and told myself it was normal to have this occasionally.. maybe it wouldnt happen at all?

thanks for the great advice. although i eat yoghurts, cheese, eggs and i have good days for days! ive tried cutting these out before and its the same so i thought i might as well eat them!
ive found that there isnt a certain food that'll trigger me.. its my mood. weather im having a bad anxiety day,or not.
when you say stress triggers ibs i agree. but i cant see that any particualar foods will make any difference??

You HAVE to have the tests (inc. a colonoscopy) to have IBS diagnosed. Your doctor should NOT have diagnosed you without doing these first. Go back and DEMAND either a referal to a GI specialist or a colonoscopy. This is VERY important, especially as you have slightly abnormal symptoms (though it could still be IBS).

the reason that foods make a difference is because they are GI irritants.

let me try an analogy....

do you know anyone with mild to moderate asthma? i had that when i was in college. ok, on most normal weekends i could go to a bar or a party where the air was filled with cigarette (and other!) smoke and have no problems aside from stinking like an ashtray the next day. so, in those cases, one could argue that 2nd hand smoke, even copious amounts, was not an asthma trigger for me.

HOWEVER... if i had bronchitis, i couldn't stand near a smoker outside in the fresh air without having an asthma attack. in those cases, 2nd hand smoke, even in minute amounts, was definitely a major asthma trigger for me, even though it normally wasn't.

in the same way, dairy products, caffiene, high-fat products, and other things identified in this diet are IBS triggers, just like the smoke was a trigger for my asthma. IBS means that your large intestines aren't working properly, just like my lungs weren't with the bronchitis. in IBS, your large intestines are prone to either pushing things through too fast (causing diarrhea) or too slowly (causing constipation), or sometimes switching back and forth between. if you put a known GI irritant in your mouth, it will eventually make its way to the large intestines where they will irritate the already messed up system there. sadly, though we love those foods, they are known GI irritants. the reason i am emphasizing that is this: Heather didn't make up the fact that dairy and caffiene and other triggers are GI irritants. they just ARE, and studies and doctors and researchers agree! i loved my coffee, but even back in the day before IBS i knew that a strong cup of coffee in the morning would trigger a BM. lots of smokers and coffee drinkers will tell you the same.

i don't care if you used to eat a gigantic cheeseburger and large fries while sipping your Diet Coke and following it with an icecream sundae. i used to be able to do that, too. however, i cannot now because i have IBS. now, i may not want to believe that, but it's true. cutting all of the triggers identified on this diet, eating the recommended way, adding soluble fiber supplements.... these things all help me stay diarrhea-free. i have not had diarrhea yet this year. and this time a year ago i was having diarrhea 10-12 times before noon EVERY DAY. i never thought that my cheeseburgers were responsible, however i was so fed up with being sick i gave Heather's diet a chance and followed it 100% (though it took 6 months of cheating to really get to 100%). once i DID give it 100%, i got well. and i stay well. so, you may believe that these foods aren't a problem, but i think your colon disagrees! i read your other post... you sound like you're in attack-mode a lot of the time. you may be surprised to find relief if you try this diet 100%.

All they did was take a stool sample and listen to my symptoms.. prescribed me with an anti spasmodic, and some anti diorreal tablets if im having a bad day, and see how that works!
never a mention of looking into it any further, and i just thought that when my Doctor said "thats ibs" i beleived him.. but he might be wrong i guess!

i can see what your saying, but i still find it hard to understand! the items on the insoluble fibre list like wholewheat, wholegrain bread.. grapes, rasins etc. and all the other things i can eat without having anything in my stomach and be totally fine. Then il get one through back day where i have D.
I havent had a colonoscopy or anything like that,to diagnose. the doctor prescribed me as IBS from the symptoms i told him.
What i was classing as D on a day to day basis, really isnt compared to some of the stories ive read on hear. Its "loose" BM. with D maybe every 3 months 2 or 3 times then the pain goes for another few months!?
i think my panic disorder has made me throw it all out of proportion..making me feel worse.

That's absolutely amazing and wonderful!! If only my husband could stabilize like you have! You give a person hope that it is possible. Do you take acacia..if so, can I ask how much? Have you totally eliminated dairy, fat, and meat from your diet? Thanks!!

i wish everyone could be as tummy-stable as i am! in fact, i'm quite resentful because i'm on a medication that's making me constipated and it's really ruining my streak, here!

i do take acacia. in fact, it wasn't 'til after i started the acacia that i really stabilized. (though i totally admit to lots of cheating and not regularly taking soluble fiber before that! )

i started the acacia at 1 tsp a day and worked up very slowly (over several weeks between each addition) to 1 1/2 tsps a day. i'm aiming for the full 3 Tbsp a day!

well, ya know not all meat has to be eliminated, right? maybe that was just a typo and you meant to say "red meat?" because i have given up red meat. in fact, it was easy because for quite a while now just seeing red meat on tv would make me feel a little queasy! i do love to eat chicken, fish (salmon!) and sometimes turkey. i also eat a lot of soy to get some protein. i do try to phase in some black beans, too, "for the protein" (actually, if you want the honest truth- it's because i think life without black beans is not worth living! ).

i have eliminated dairy. that was hard! i love cheese and icecream. i was never a cereal eater and i hate drinking milk, so there were no hardships there. though, i've actually gotten into eating cereal now with Silk soy milk! yum. i'm still trying to track down decent soy or rice cheeses. the ones i've found are good, but not cheese-ish enough for me (if you've tried them, you know what i mean by that!). i do think the shredded cheeses are pretty good and are nice on a pizza or sprinkled on pasta or a baked potato.

i haven't eliminated fat, because some fat in the diet is really necessary for your health. i get fat from really tasty yummy things like avocado and salmon (not together!). does your hubby like guacamole!? it's terribly easy to make and feels quite decadent to eat! i do check labels for low fat-ness. (what a pain!)

hopefully this may make your husband feel better: (shh, don't tell anyone i said this! it's just between me and you!) i have found that since i got stable i can cheat more frequently than i had dreamed possible! (shh! i told you--- scandalous, right!?) i still follow the rules, mind you, but from time to time when i'm quite stable, i can have almost whatver i want! just a bit, and with soluble fiber, but still.... it's pretty sweet to cheat! my favorite cheat is quite a cheat. it's at an Afghani restaurant and i get the pumpkin apetizer (soluble fiber) that has yogurt pooled over it (not soluble fiber!). then i have a kabob and roasted veggies over spicy rice (soluble fiber + insoluble fiber + chicken). desert, though, desert is great! vanilla icecream with dates and figs. MMMmmmmm... hungry now!

it can work for your husband. i swear! but he'll have to really commit to it (ugh, i know! i didn't want to either!) until he's really stable and been there for a while. then maybe, just maybe, he can try to "safely cheat" on some old favorites from BI (before IBS).

best of luck!

i would definitely go back to the doctor if i were you and get that colonoscopy. i think it's very important! the BMs you're describing aren't normal, and i know you realize that or you wouldn't be here! i just hate to see people suffer any discomfort that they don't have to...

i hope that you give this diet a try, really commit to it, because i believe that it will help you. i know many of us don't really understand HOW it works! our doctors don't even know about this kind of thing. but it has made a lot of us feel so much better.

best of luck. hope you get things straightened out.
