Hello Everyone!
I have a few questions about all this food stuff. I just started reading heathers first year with IBS book and I'm still a little confused about what I CAN eat! I know soluble fiber.. but what has soluble fiber..
~ for example.. can we eat rice a roni, or uncle bens flavorful rice at all? I'm not a huge fan of plain white rice, but love eating cous cous and chicken flavored rices, but could these be causing my IBS?
~I also eat a cereal that I buy at trader joes, and the brand is barabaras, I can't remember the name but it is alot like toasted oatmeal squares.. is this ok?!

Check the ingredients on the flavored rices. You don't want any dairy, chicken fat, artifical, or basically any funky ingredients.
You can make white rice with chicken broth instead of water, and that will give it some flavor.
Here's a thread that may help you out also: Jazzing Up Plain Rice.
I've never heard of the cereal. Can you list the ingredients? Maybe that would help.

Three pieces of advice:
1. Read the ingredients list. 2. Read the ingredients list. 3. Read the ingredients list.
RiceARoni and some others are loaded with MSG. I'm deathly allergic to the stuff, but there are all kinds of other nasties in the ingredients too. However, you can buy the box and throw away the seasoning packet! There are also other excellent brands (e.g. FarmHouse and Casbah) with packages on the market with no icky ingredients.

Just some advice - by VERY careful with anything "flavoured" like rice, crackers etc. Very often these products use dairy products to get the flavouring, especially if they've got a 'powder' like flavouring agent, like a package of seasoning for rice or the tops of crackers or breads, also powdered soups etc.. I've learned this the hard way after years and years of lactose intollerance.
So... ALWAYS READ LABELS! I've forced myself to become an obsessive label reader. In the ingredients list, look for things like: - lactose - whey - caseinate - modified milk ingredients - dry milk solids - milk by-products - curds - milk-powder - etc...
These are all dairy products, even some of them don't even appear to be milk-derived from their names. So if your rice contains these, put it back on the shelf.

Hi and welcome (or welcome again, if I'm repeating myself!)
Ditto everything my friends on the message board have said. One clarification. It's much more likely that your IBS is being caused by triggers like alcohol, coffee, fried foods, red meats and rich high-fat desserts than by any kind of rice, even the flavored ones. I personally have had good results by first eliminating the major triggers, then if I'm still having problems, to look more closely for the culprits.
As far as your basic question about what has soluble fiber, here's the link to Heather's list:
Soluble Fiber Foods
Just some thoughts. Take what you like and leave the rest. Good luck and keep coming back!
