Hi Jen,
i think colace is a stool softener much like dulcolax. my understanding is that it is not a laxative. i took it while i was pregnant and for a little while after giving birth to help with the C that was thought to be brought on by the iron in the prenatal vitamins.
i found that it worked well and was very very glentle

they just called a prescription in for it. i don't like to use laxatives, 'cause i'm deathly afraid of rebound diarrhea.
you've answered my question and calmed me down. THANKS!

Jen
i just did a quick search on colace and it seems to be identified as a stool softener and laxative. here's the link info on colace
my doctor had always told me it was a stool softener only and it worked so GENTLY and so well for me that it never occurred to me that the maker of the drug calls it a laxative too.... hope i didn't send you down the garden path sorry about that!!!!

this is why i absolutely loathe medications. it seems like everything you take will undo something good and maybe only possibly do what it's supposed to do.
ARGH!
thanks so much. you're great!

Today i'm actually doing anything i can to GO... i tried the lemon juice / cayenne warm water thing this morning - NO GO i took a peppermint cap and had peppermint tea and tons of water - still no GO really. i bought Mil of Magnesia but haven't opened it yet cause i hate meds too!
i think i'll try a banana - blueberry smoothie next! (the strawberry-banana one i had this morning hasn't done it for me yet today.....
it's comical and frustrating the things we do just to go to the bathroom! hang in there - i know the C feeling all too well and i hate it too....
now i have to do some work

I've taken it for years and years, even before IBS. I get the OTC from Costco that says only "Stool Softener". It's cheap. It's the ONE thing that doesn't seem to have ANY side affects, for me and at least and keeps those little suckers from being more like rocks. I really don't think you'll have a problem. I believe the perscription form is only double the potentcy of the OTC, so if it seems to strong you could go the smaller size route.
