Does anyone feel that they bring their IBS symptoms on themselves? (m)

I wonder this sometimes. I truly believe that mine has been stress induced when my mom died last year. I really never had problems before she got sick and went through the stress of all of that. I'd hear bad news and immediately get D. Well, now it's more under control, I can go weeks w/o symptoms. But I think when I worry about getting it, or have to go somewhere I almost talk myself into it...all of a sudden, I feel those "butterflies" and before I know it, I'm hitting the bathroom. And it's not just "D", it's just the urgency to go more than I think I should be going. Sorry for the rambling. Just wondered if anyone felt the same way. Keys to relaxing this spastic colon?

Hi Sandy,

I think you're on to something here. Our conscious minds send negative messages to our subconscious, and our subconscious controls all our bodily functions.

I recommend the hypnotherapy tapes. They're incredible. Have you given them any thought? They helped me SOOOO much! Go into the hypnosis board and check out the success stories. I think they'd help you a lot.

Bev

Thanks I will...I know the mind has an incredible affect on the body both good and bad! I guess the trick is to eliminate the bad eh?

To quote Michael: "Positive thoughts produce positive results; negative thoughts produce negative results."

JessieGirl, I've been thinking about your post ever since I responded this morning, especially after my morning "bout."

Hubby wanted to go antique-shopping, so I said okay, made a quick trip to the potty (tried to "force it," to make sure I was "cleaned out"), and we headed out. When we got to the first antique shop, BAM! I had to go. It really made me angry with myself, because I KNEW I didn't really have to; after all, I just "cleaned myself out!" What was going on with me?

I ignored the rumbling, bloat, and the feeling of urgency, and tried to enjoy the shopping, while looking around for the bathroom. I lucked out with the bathroom, but then saw the note on the door, "Employees Only." RATS! Okay, Bev, not a problem; after all, you don't REALLY have to go, you know you don't, you just have a mental problem!

We left the store, then went on to the next one, all the while rumbling down below. Again, I scouted out the bathroom -- and same thing with the note on the door, "Employees Only!" I hate that.

By the time we got to the fourth antique shop, it was HUBBY who had to go, so we stopped at a public bathroom. I told myself, "Self, you're not going to go. Remember Michael's words: 'There are no demands or insistence.' You know it's just all in your head, you're up tight for some reason, and by the time you get home you won't have to go!" So I didn't go.

We drove home, and on the way my tummy completely relaxed. By the time we got to the front door, I didn't have to go at all. And, you know, I STILL haven't gone!

So what's going on here? I'm relaxed at home, close to the bathroom. I'm not relaxed out on the street where there are no bathrooms. My subconscious is causing my body to cramp up and get a feeling of urgency -- and why? Because my conscious mind is telling it to do that.

I need to listen to Michael some more.

So is this what happens with you too?

Bev

I've had that happen to me so many times!!

Just a couple weeks ago I had plans to go to a friend's house where there was going to be a lot of people I didn't know and the washroom is right in front of the living room so if I have to use it...well...I'm sure you get the picture!!

I made sure I made 2-3 visits to the washroom before I left home and I was totally fine.

When I was about 2 minutes from my friend's house I got a serious urgency and had to stop at a gas station to use the washroom ...and nothing came out!!

I continued on to my friend's place and as soon as I walked in the door and started to relax and talk to people...I forgot about being tense and stressed about having to use the washroom and all the stomach pain went away!!

It truly is amazing how much power the mind has over the body!!

I'm really looking forward to receiving the hypno tapes so I can hear what Michael has to say about all this.

Jessie,
I find that the more stressed I am the worse it is for me. we all know stress is bad for us.

Ditto on what everyone else said. That used to happen (and still does in certain situations but I'm working on it! ) to me all the time. Hypno does wonders for it. You should try it!

I totally believe you can bring it on that way. When mine began at 22, I had just begun teaching and it was extremely stressful. I taught for 17 years, and about five years ago, I had the class from hell. Guess what? The IBS kicked within a couple of months. I got better, but this year I began a new job as a librarian. I LOVE MY JOB, but it was learning lots of new things and not feeling confident that caused the stress and anxiety. Even positive anxiety will bring on an attack for me! I can get excited about going to a party or on vacation, and mine will kick in. The food part then just aggravates it from there!
