Bloats

Can someone please help me. I have IBS with C and the bloating is driving me crazy. I start the day looking pretty slim in the middle then by the end of the day I look 4 mths pregnant. I can't afford Zelnorm at the moment and I can't stand the taste of the fennel tea ( I do want to drink it) and it seems that no matter what I eat or how much of it I get bloated. It's getting me very depressed and when bloated my mood changes and not for the better. I need advise on what to do or not to do. I'm trying to follow what foods NOT to eat but that is hard. I hardly eat anything anymore; my diet mainly consists of chicken, bananas, wraps with just deli chicken and mayo, bran muffins. Even the "safe" foods affect me in a negative way. I'm extremely stressed due to my job (I hate it) and I think I swallow a lot of air as I get gassy in addition to the bloating. Please help.

Try mixing the fennel with either peppermint or dried lavender (my favourite!). I hate the taste too, but have it like this and its fine - and worth it!

Could you make up some veggie soup to get some safer insolubles? Bran muffins sound like they'd be awfully harsh to your gut. Following the diet guidelines really will help. Have you got a fibre supplement? These are really important.

Exercise really helps with bloating and I find yoga a great way to get the gas out (doing it on my own, not in class ).

a few thoughts:
you say you're having trouble following What Not to Eat, because it's hard? yes, it is hard at first, but worth it. eating and drinking things that are GI irritants will make you sick. you can eat all the safe foods you want, but if you're putting things like bran muffins and sodas and cokes and milk and things like that in your mouth, too, then they will make it down to your intestines where they will wreak havoc. believe me, cutting these things out are the way to go. and i know it's hard. i've done it AND i've cut out wheat. but i didn't stop hurting until i quit all the bad things. i have been able to gradually add some things back into my diet carefully and after a meal with soluble fiber, but first i had to quit it all and get stable.

bran muffins are probably too harsh for your stomach. if i eat a bran muffin, i then spend the rest of the morning in the bathroom. yes, some people recommend bran and whole wheats for IBS, but not here on this diet. i eat IBS safe 24 hours a day, but if i were to add a bran muffin in, i will still get sick.

mayonaise is not on the IBS diet. sorry. it contains eggs. most mayo is not low fat and if it is "light" you'll find high fructose corn syrup in it. no mayo!

if you are able to successfully cut out all the triggers, i believe you will find your symptoms improve. the safe foods are "safe" for a reason. if you're finding them irritating to the stomach once you've cut all your triggers, than you need to see what else may be going on-- maybe you have other food intolerances?

stress is definitely something that can impact your IBS. have you considered yoga or hypnosis? they both work, as do meditating (simple meditation: just become conscious of your breathing. just be aware of it for a few minutes, then try to slow it down and breath deeply for a few more minutes. repeat as necessary)

Linz gave you some good advice about tea. you can try chamomile and peppermint if you don't care for the fennel, or try to mix other things into the fennel.

hope you start feeling better soon.

I have the same problem, but with gas instead. I am taking Acacia twice a day, 2 tsp each time, and peppermint capsules twice a day. (i'm ibs-c) I feel like I have a handle on the c, but the gas i don't. How can I make it go away??? Does fennel tea really work? i mean, I am already taking peppermint capsules, doesn't that have fennel in it?

If i do start the fennel tea, how many times per day should I drink it?

thanks!!

Uh oh Jen, now I'm confused...I thought low-fat mayo in small amounts was ok? I mean, there's a lot of tuna recipes on the boards that I just assumed had mayo in them (was that wrong?).

Quite a few of us can tolerate a little mayo - but check your labels! It's amazing what s**t they sneak into food!

that's awesome if you can tolerate the mayo.... i know i can't.... i think it's the HFCS, actually... maybe i'll check out the labels when i'm @ the store next, see if i can find some without HFCS!

Check out Smart Beat Non Fat mayo. It uses sugar and not HFCS. It's one of the few I can tolerate.

i'm also ibs-c and i drink both fennel and peppermint tea. i just got some of the peppermint caps - i've only taken them twice so far (yesteday actually) and i think they helped with the bloating a bit.

i'm not sure if there's a specific "number of times" you should drink the fennel tea. what i usually do is have peppermint tea about an hour after breakfast then i have fennel tea any time i feel gasy or bloated. even if i don't feel gasy or bloated i have fennel tea at least once a day - not sure how i came up with that number - just figured if it helped i should drink it, i guess!
