I have been trying so hard to get stable. I was having diarrhea everyday about 2 months ago then went on Heather's diet. I guess it worked too good because now, I get constipated. For the past month I will have 4 days of constipation then explosive diarrhea attacks that leave me completely weak and unable to function. I have been taking citracel religiously everyday and eating all of the right foods and drinking lots of water but I still get these attacks. I feel like I can't really take any medication because the medication for D makes me C and when I get C I get the explosive D a few days later. I am just not sure what I am doing wrong, or if I should be doing more, or if it will just get better with time, or if this is the way it is going to be forever.
I know this is a tricky puzzle to solve but ANY advice would be so so so greatly appreciated. BTW, do any of you still suffer from attacks now and then or are you pretty stable?
Thanks so much for your help. You guys are the best!!
Oh I should also mention (as embarrasing as it is) that I have terrible terrible external and internal hemorrhoids. The constipation and diarrhea is just reaking so much havoc on them and as a result I am in terrible pain most of the time. In order to get those under control, I have to get my gut under control.

Do you think it's possible you're just having a hard time getting used to the Citrucel? Is it the powder or capsules? How much are you taking? How long have you been taking it -- four weeks? Have you tried increasing it, perhaps too soon or too much all at once?
I was stable for quite awhile, then I had an attack a few weeks ago, and got another last night. It's frustrating, I know. I'm a D -- I've never had C, so I don't know what that's like (although I'd much rather have D and be able to get it all out of me!), so I don't know if I can be of much help to you in that department.
For those hemorrhoids, can't you use a suppository, like Preparation H? I used the cream externally and got rid of mine (but there were external only). Also, I never go to the bathroom without my "potty wipes," which I also keep in my purse for "on-the-road" potty visits. They're a Godsend!
I don't know if this will help you much, but I noticed a big improvement when I started taking a probiotic. I've been on them now for about 4 months, and I love them. My poops are much more "normal" now, and the bloating and gas are greatly reduced.

I'm so sorry you're having such a tough time. It sounds like you're doing what you should be doing. Maybe there are hidden triggers in foods that you aren't aware of... maybe double check ingredient labels.
BTW - It is an adorable picture of you with your baby!
Can the doctor give you anything to help with the hemmoroids?
Maybe go over the basic guidelines of the diet again just to make sure you didn't miss something.
In answer to your question about stability and still getting attacks... I went a whole month doing really well but then got major D after having a gardenburger. The ingredients all looked completely safe and it only had 2 grams of fat but WHAMO. I still haven't figured that one out yet.
Again I'm sorry things aren't going well - I will pray for you - peace, wisdom, understanding and guidance to figure out what is needed for relief.
You'll be in my prayers tonight, Leigh

I too am having problems balancing things out and it is greatly affecting my hemorrhoids. I think I only have external ones too. I better, I had a hemorrhoidectomy 6 months ago! Have you tried taking several warm baths/day? Witch hazel? Epsom salts? Did you see your doc? Are you getting exercise? These are all good for hemmies. Exercise is really good for regularity too. Even just walking.

DanaNoel,
Hi there. Sorry to hear about getting D and I know the feeling of weakness from those bouts. You mentioned taking Citracel everyday. How much? Tabs or Powder? I found that Citracel only made my D worse, due to the citric acid in it, I think. Anyway, I can take the pills and get no problems. Perhaps a dose of Equalactin would help you out as it balances out for both D and C and will not give you C. Do you take fiber before each meal? That is the main key I found that I'd been skipping and still got IBS. I am stable right now and I hope you become stable too.
Take Care ~~ Anna

it may be the citucel...
what dose are you taking? maybe you're not taking enough? maybe you added it in too fast? maybe you just don't work well with Citrucel and another soluble fiber supplement would work better for you?
have you been tested to eliminate other issues that could cause problems (gluten issues?)? could you be reacting to something else you're eating a lot of? have you added supplements that may have constipated you (calcium, Vit C), or changed brands? are you sure you're not cheating without meaning to? are you drinking tons of water? have you quit coffee? sodas?
um... i think those are the only annoying questions i can think of right now... but if i think of more i'll come back!

Hi Dana,
Sorry to hear you are feeling bad. I can't reinforce enough about reading labels on everything you put in your mouth. I just had a bad two weeks and couldn't figure out what it was until I read the label on my vitamins and they had mannitol and 138% of daily iron. I was also eating oatmeal that had 45% of daily iron. Too much iron can upset your stomach as well as mannitol/sorbitol. I stopped the vitamins and found oatmeal with less iron and I am doing fine. Also, I keep a food diary which helps me try to figure out my trigger foods.
Feel better soon Barbie
