Bev,

I was reading that taking omega 3 oils such as flax seed oil is supposed to help us IBSers. But I have also heard that it gives some people the dreaded D. Since you are an IBS-D and I think you said you were taking flax seed oil I was wondering if you might tell me if it has affected you in any adverse ways??

Thanks, Cindy

I haven't tried the oil, but I often sprinkle a little flaxseed meal on my hot cereal in the morning. My mom's been using it for about a year and she says it works better than ANYTHING to relieve D and running back and forth.

Hi Cindy,

Yes, I'm taking large doses (3,000mg./day) of flax seed oil for my high cholesterol, and have been for about a month now. Can you imagine how much salmon I'd have to eat to get that much omega-3 and omega-6 oil?

You know, your question is a real interesting one, because it makes me stop and think. I've had two attacks since I've been on the capsules, and, while I had the cramps and D, actually the D wasn't nearly as severe as usual. I had an attack yesterday from eating honeydew melon without a soluble fiber first -- duh -- and the cramps began right away, followed by the infamous D -- but only one RUN to the bathroom and the D was over with! That's VERY unusual for me.

So no, I'd have to say the capsules haven't affected me in that way at all; in fact, just the opposite. Now, if it'll just help reduce my triglycerides.....

Bev, have you ever made mayonnaise with flaxseed oil? I've made it with several other oils, but not flaxseed. I wonder, would this be an IBS-safe way to eat mayo??

Heather??

I wouldn't recommend it. The oil, although very heart-healthy, is still oil. Too much fat!

Really? Too much? 'scuse my ignorance here, because I've been eating a sorta low-fat diet for about 30 years, and recently it's even lower fat, but I can tolerate mayo just FINE. I mean, a spoonful of flax oil mayo on toast with a lunch sandwich is different from flax oil supplements in which way ??????

Kelly, if you want flax seed oil mayo, goferit! You asked my opinion, and my opinion is no. I answered your question as regards myself, not you or anyone else.

I HAVE to take the supplements for my high cholesterol. If I didn't have to, I wouldn't. It's too much oil. Again, it's "heart-healthy," but it's still oil. I don't eat mayo. I try to cut out as much fat as I possibly can, especially now that I'm taking all those supplements.

I can't answer your question as regards to you; only you can do that, and it sounds like you've already done it.

Waitaminute, Bev [[bonks self on head]] I didn't mean specifically you or me, I meant like IN GENERAL in relation to IBS diet, if the idea is that there are good oils and bad oils, then wouldn't making a mayonnaise of good oils be A Good Thing?? Not necessarily for you or for me, but in general?

We both understand that nutritional needs and preferences and tolerances are different for each person .... it just seems like to me that an oil made with a good oil would be a good thing, that's all.
