Equalactin vs Acacia? Also a ?? about Soy

Hello everyone,

I have 2 quick questions.

1. What is the difference between equalactin and acacia? Which one is the better choice of daily fiber? At the moment I am taking citricel but thinking about switching. I have heard a lot of good things about both acacia and equalactin from the boards and it seems that a lot of you guys are taking both.

2. I drink a lot of soy. I was just wondering since soy is actually a bean, is it considered a soluable fiber? I want to drink soy shakes as my snack in between meals to try and gain some weight, but I need to make sure the soy milk can count as my soluable fiber base.

Thanks so much!

I started the Acacia a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. Completely dissolves in my peppermint tea. Start off slowly and work your way very slowly to two tablespoons.

I have not been able to find the Equalactin yet, but my understanding is to use that before going to a restaurant or trip but not for daily use.

I don't have any wisdom about the soy being a soluble base for you. I'm sure someone out there will shed some light.

Good luck,
Leigh

I've never used the acacia but really like Equalactin. I take two with breakfast and two in the evening at dinner and it has been one of the most beneficial things I have found so far. Me and Citrucel didn't seem to see eye to eye. I know some people like Bevr take it in a as needed type of way instead of daily.

Hi, there.

Equalactin rocks, but it's price is kind of high, especially compared to the acacia. it comes in a box of something like 20 tablets in the drugstore, and 48 per box online. the price where i buy it online ( www.drugstore.com) is $7.49. if i were to to up my dosage to Heather's suggestions, i'd be broke!

meanwhile, i buy my acacia from Heather @ $10.95 for 16oz. i bought 2 bags about 2 months ago and am still on the first bag.

the Equalactin works great as an emergency treatment or prophylactically when you're not near your house or going to have a meal with no soluble fiber (TSK TSK! ).

Here, as always, everything i say can be summed up more concisely by my dear friend Bevrs:

Quote:

I doubt that you would want to take Equalactin on a regular basis because you'd have to be constantly chewing it up. Each tablet contains only a half gram of fiber, which isn't nearly enough. I don't know what dosage of your daily supplement you're up to, but I take 4-1/2 grams twice a day. In order for me to get enough of the Equalactin, I'd have to chew up 9 tablets twice a day! Yowza!

Even if you were addicted to the marvelous taste and enjoyed constantly chomping on these things, there's the cost to consider. 48 tablets cost $7. At the rate of 9 tablets per dose, that's only 5 doses. I can buy a 2-month supply of Acacia for only $11!

Now do you still want to take Equalactin instead of your Acacia or Citrucel powder?

Don't get me wrong; I love the stuff. As Janey said, I should own stock in the company. I certainly do sell it a lot. However, I keep it for emergencies only; for some reason, it just works when others don't.

hope we answered that!?

Here's the info for buying it online: Equalactin @ Drugstore.com

as for the soy as soluble fiber question: soy is on Heather's list of soluble fiber foods ( Soluble Fiber ~ The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Good Guy) so drink up!

NOTE: if you haven't ever eaten much soy, you may react adversely to it at first (it is a bean!). if you notice gas or bloating with the soy, try Beano or drink some fennel or peppermint tea to soothe the tummy and then add soy sloooooowly to your diet. your body will get used to it (in most cases) and learn to produce the right enzymes to digest the soy...

Good luck.

Dana, soy can be a soluble fiber base, but soy MILK really isn't because a lot of it is water. It does work fine in shakes, because the fruits or whatever else you throw in get pureed and are a lot easier to digest. But I wouldn't drink a glass of soy milk and then expect to be able to digest a lettuce salad. Does that make sense?

Hi Dana,

I can only answer your first question. I don't know the answer to your second.

Equalactin is too expensive to take as a replacement for your powder. I did a post about this a few days ago in which I figured out the cost of Acacia versus Equalactin, and there was no comparison; Equalactin turned out to be something like three times the cost. Also -- and here's the rub -- you'd have to snarf down a bazillion tablets of Equalactin to get enough of the same amount of fiber that you would get from the powder, whether it's Citrucel or Acacia.

By the way, I switched from Citrucel to Acacia; good choice. But one gal here, who did the same, switched back. It's a personal thing, and it's pretty much trial-and-error. Frankly, I can't mix that Citrucel in water and watch it thicken and then get it down me; I'd gag on it. And don't get me started on the taste!

Acacia has no taste, and it doesn't thicken. It's extremely cost-effective as well. A $10 supply lasts me approx. 2-3 months (I'm increasing the dosage, so it's changing).

Hope someone else can answer your second question.

Bev
