I occasionally will have spells where either an arm or a leg, or some combination therefore, will shake uncontrollably. It's not blood sugar, the latest severe episode this past Monday, I had eaten lunch about 45 minutes before, and my right arm shook violently for about 2 hours and then just stopped. I get the shakes almost every day anymore, but they're not too bad. The spell on Monday was so bad I didn't go to a lecture for class. I don't know if this is linked to my IBS or not. I've brought it up to my doc, but my doc just ignored it. Anyone else get this, or have any insight? I can deal with the little shakes, but the violent shaking spells freak me out....

you need to take that question back to your doctor and demand an answer. if he/she can't do that, then you need to find a new doctor ASAP. that's ridiculous.

i am hoping they're benign, but even then you are bothered by them (they "freak you out") and therefore the question deserves an answer. i'm no doctor (nor do i play one on teevee) but off the top of my head i can think of several things that could cause that. i'm really angry with your doctor right now.

be tough! get an answer! please let me know what you find out. i'm going to be a pain in your butt 'til you tell me you've called.

I agree with Jen, you should demand that your doc either help you figure out what's causing that or send you to someone else who can. I've never heard of it being a symptom of IBS before, and I don't blame you for wanting to find out the cause. Let us know how it goes!

i concur. you totally have to be tough with doctors to get anywhere, sadly. i went to my doc complaining of very bad knee pain and swelling for months, and she just gave me pain killers. finally i demanded more answers and got an MRI. turned out i needed surgery to remove some loose pieces of bone that had chipped off and were causing major problems.

Go back to you doc and DEMAND they look into it! i've never had random shaking or spasms and don't know anyone else (IBS or otherwise) who has.

Well, funny you should ask, Jen.....

The shaking's gotten worse this week, along with these headaches I keep getting every time I try to read or use the computer and flashes of light I sometimes see with my right eye, so I went to Student Health, but they couldn't do anything. Went to the ER last night, but they couldn't do anything either. So I have an appointment with a neurologist for May 12, which they won't move up because they think I'll be ok until then. The ER docs and I think the neurologist (who I haven't seen before) think it's just stress, but I think something is really wrong. So I'm just in limbo until the 12th....

Thanks for asking though!

maybe you have migraines. Just as far as the headaches/seeing lights. As far as the shaking, when I was at the college thing over the weekend, in the dining hall i was standing up holding my tray and all of a sudden my arms started shaking and I like needed to sit down fast. But i think mine was because I hadn't had enough to drink and it was really hot outside (plus that was when I was feeling faint) Maybe you need to drink more? Or lie down? Or take a hot bath..or..I'm sorry you have to wait until the 12th. Good luck. I hope it's nothing serious! I'm thinking about you, okay!

i swear, i could just strangle someone. that makes me ill! i can't believe they're putting you off that long. you poor girl!

how does one become a patient advocate? is there such a thing? i think i want to do that. really! i can't believe people have to put up with so much!

hang in there. if it gets really bad, go to the ER again and force their hand if you can. tell them "don't make me get jen up here!" HEY! i WILL be in Philly next week from Thursday morning 'til Sunday. i'll come kick some a*s for you.

smooches.

when my parents brought me to the Er at children's hospital they admitted me and the neurologist saw me the next morning and it was a saturday. go to a hospital like a teaching hospital or one that has an er that has to have specialists on call around the clock. cause even at night the er docs talked to the neurologist who told them what tests to give me. Just a thought Good luck! I'd say go to a Children's hospital but are you over 21? b/c they totally pay attention to you there...they even dimmed the lights for me when i was really light sensitive..IN THE ER!
