Hi,
I have had IBS for several years. Any day that my stomach feels good is a great day. I am so jealous of my husband because he can eat anything and never gets stomach trouble. I had a panic attack a couple of years ago and have had a lot of anxiety since. The doctor prescribed Librax...reduces anxiety and relaxes stomach. It seems to have helped me. Also, phazyme is the best thing I have found for gas. One other thing, sorbitol gives my stomach fits. You can find sorbitol in some lotions and haircolor, too, and I think it can be absorbed through the skin. Some people don't know that. Also called sorbitan in some sweet baked goods. I have become really good at reading labels to see what is in everything.

Sometimes I think the jealousy of people who can eat normally without all this worry is the worst symptom. I know stress is a major factor for me- we started our own business three years go and the money worries really don't help- on the other hand I love the work, I enjoy spending more time with my husband- and mostly I can work from home and fit everything around my symptoms. However these past couple of weeks we've had major sales presentations and meetings with venture capitalists- you can imagine how my guts have reacted to that! I do find that relaxation tapes help though I've only just started the one recommended in Heather's book. Walking regularly helps too. I'm thinking of taking up tai chi or yoga- but am a bit worried about it as I'm very overweight and don't know if I can handle it yet. (On the positive side over the past two years I've lost a lot of weight- the combination of fear of food and daily walking) Ann in Brighton UK

Hi Ann,
You're right, one of the best ways to lose weight is the fear of eating something that will make your stomach feel bad. I lost too much weight once (not by choice and I wasn't overweight) and I had to really concentrate on eating more. That was quite a challenge. I lived on a lot of potatoes, chicken noodle soup, peanut butter, and yogurt ice cream. Finally gained some weight. One thing I hate is not being able to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. At least I am taking a vitamin supplement to get some nutrition. Hope your stress will get better.
