I am DYING for some cheese, so I went to the supermaket, and only found one type of non-dairy cheese- its was called 'veggie slices' and i looked on the back of the package, and the ingredients were soy and non fat milk! wtf..i mean if youre gonna make a soy cheese, why add in milk, even it is only 'alittle' Anyway, does anyone know any brand names of safe soy cheese?

I know exactly what you mean about missing cheese - I used to eat cheese every day and I MISS IT ALOT!
I have tried two different types of dairy-free cheeses since I've been on this diet and I must admit neither really did anything for me. I tried "Veggie Chef's Award" cheddar flavour cheese. It has no dairy in it but has lactic acid. You could try that one. I bought it at a regular grocery store (Loblaws) here in Canada. I also tried "Soyco Rice Mozzerella" cheese. It also has lactic acid but no dairy. I also got that one at a grocery store.
You might try going to a health food store that sells vegan cheese - I hope you find something that tastes good! If you do let me know because I haven't really been happy with the cheeses I've tried so far....

A lot of the soy cheeses contain casein (a milk protein). A lot of us can tolerate them fine - some can't. It's one of those things you have to see how it works for you.
Personally, I'm okay with it, includig Veggie Slices. I've never tried the vegan cheese yet, but I've never seen a good review on one yet either.

I actually bought some of that yesterday too. I miss cheese the most, the rest of the stuff I could live without, but I love cheese. And I really did not like the veggie slices at all. I did not even taste it really. I tasted no cheese flavor either. I was so disappointed

I only like the veggies slices melted (in omelette, grilled cheese, etc). Did you try it melted yet?

I'll have to try that! I've tried the "cheddar" melted in a quesadilla (in a flour tortilla with salsa) and I've tried the "mozzerella" melted in a quesadilla as well. I also tried melting it on a pizza. Neither of those tasted like much to me but I've never tried the slices - I've only tried the solid cheeses...

You're absolutely right! This stuff DOES contain milk! Lyndeigh, you're a very smart lady to notice that! I've been eating this stuff for a long time and never saw it.
DAMN! ..... Well, so much for Veggie Slices! I'm amazed that it never bothered me. I put it on everything. I eat the cheddar flavor, American, mozzarella, and (my fave) provolone.
RATS.

Iwas looking at the veggie and rice shreds and they don't actually have milk but casein in them. As I recall Heather has discussed this in other threads and said that she has not found a good soy cheese that doesn't have casein in it. It's great to "see" you too Bev!

Yes, I can do without milk (even though we have soy & rice milks now) but find that I don't miss them anymore. But CHEESE, now that I miss. What is the safest soy cheese out there? I'm dying to try some.

Go down to the health food store and look for soy cheese there. They have it in bulk, and it's a lot better than the Veggie Slices. Safeway only carries the Veggie Slices.
I prefer the mozarella, although the cheddar isn't too bad if used in a casserole. Forget the American. The soy parmesan is fabulous; I really don't miss the "real stuff."
There are so many brands out there. Why not do a "taste test" because everyone has different tastes. What I like isn't what you're gonna like. When I first found the stuff at the health food store, I bought a little package of each kind, brought them home, and hubby and I had a taste test. It's great fun.
I need to get a life.
