I have had stomach problems for as long as I can remember. Recently I was diagnosed with IBS and while I'm glad that it wasn't all in my head at the same time I feel deprived because of the limitation on fresh fruit and vegetables. Since being diagnosed I have gone through 3 different meds. Currently I am on Dyclomine (Bentyl) which was the first med I tried that had the best affect. I saw a dietician about a month ago and have been trying to stick to the diet but it is so hard. I did purchase Heather's book "Eating for IBS" and my favorite recipe out of there is the Cinnamin Zuchini Bread. I work out 5 days a week and drink 2 glasses of the Citrucel a day. I do feel better after taking the Citrucel, it allows me to stand up straight after eating without having the piercing pains in my side especially in the morning when my symptoms tend ot be worse. My symptoms are triggered by the stress that's in my life right. I work in a high stress environment(who doesn't right) and I am planning my wedding (fiance helps to). My fiance has been truely supportive. Everytime I see my doctor I just plead with him to get me through my wedding day. I have to go for my first colonoscopy at the end of April. I here the prep is worse than the procedure so if I can get through that part than I will be fine. The colonoscopy is just precautionary to make sure that there isn't anything serious going on. I have read through some of the other messages and realize that some people have it more serious that others. My doctor had me on Nortriptyline (it's an anti-depressant) for a little while which I was unaware could cause constipation. Well, I found out within 1 day of taking it that could turned into definitly causes constipation. Yeah, my other symptoms subsided but now I was taking meds to relieve the constipation. I made the mistake of taking a stimulating laxative and thought I was going to have to go to the hospital the cramping was so bad. Well, I have said enough. Being I'm still in the learning process can anyone offer suggestions for the fruit dilema. I do eat only canned right now and the occassional banana.

Janice

Hi Janice! Welcome to the boards! Yeah, I understand all about how stress doesn't help the IBS. I, too, am planning a wedding and will be married on May 15 of this year. I also go to school and am planning on getting pregnant soon.

Concerning the fruit problem...I eat a banana for breakfast usually and am fine. Also, I eat appleasauce just about every day. Most people are fine with that.
Personally, I eat any fruit I want (but NOT raisins!!! Major gas!!). If any fruit DOES cause pain later on, I've never made the connection between the two. I haven't noticed any particular fruit hurting me after I eat it.
I guess that's my advice. Hope it somewhat helped

Thank you for welcoming me, my wedding is September 18. My fiance Jason and I are actually in a wedding 3 weeks before our own. Talk about a stressfull time.

As far as the fruit: apples, grapes, peaches and Nectarines are the fruits that trigger my symptoms. I only realized this after I stopped eating them and started to feel better. I can not stand apple sauce, I've never liked it. Same goes for Jello. I do drink 1/2 a glass of the low acid orange juice at breakfast and seem to be fine with that.

Try peeling the apples! It's the skin that's really high in insoluble fibre. Same with all the others you said.

Welcome to the boards! HEre's a few simple suggestions for fruits - applesauce cups are my best friend. Have one a day. Have a glass of cranberry juice a day - that's two. Have Heather's strawberry smoothie - a cup of strawberries, a banana and some soy milk (check out the recipe board) and that's 4 in a day. Simple, but it gets the job done.

Janice,
welcome, I am new to this site too and am thankful for it and the book. Just wanted to agree with whoever told you about the prep for the colonoscopy was defintely right. I had one about 5 years ago for the same reasons to rule out Chrohns, polyps etc and thank God it's just "spastic colon". I wouldn't wish IBS on anyone ever but you gotta deal with what you're dealt. Don't sweat the colonoscopy...you won't remember a thing thanks to the good ol drug Verced (sp?)...the prep the night before is when you'll be hating life....have plenty of t.p. standing by, a good book, and it'll be over before you know it. Good luck

Oh, I just remembered - do a search for colonoscopy prep. One of the Crohn's girls did a fantastic post on this that I wish I'd had when I did the prep.
