Well after 24 hours of liquids and strong laxitives had barium enema this morning.

One procedure I did not expect as it is now standard for the test is withdrawing some of the barium by the tube and then using air to expand the colon for more pictures. Doctor did warn me beforehand as he knew by my records that I had a barium enema before and this part of the procedure was not done in previous test so not to get worried about something I did not expect.

Still trying to get rest of this air out with remaining barium. Did have a light lunch and will try a normal supper tonight. I am aware that I still must drink lits of liquids.

Wondering if others have gone through this experience and whether they felt this way after.

Hey Art! Glad to hear the enema went alright! It's good to hear from a patient's point of view, as I never talk to them after the procedure is done.

That being said, I probably can't offer much in the way of letting you know how soon you should be feeling better, ie: the air and all. I maybe should have warned you that if they were concerned about cancer and polyps, there was a good chance they would do the air one. That gives a much more detailed view, and the ups the chances of finding a small growth if there is anything.

The good part about this type that you had, is, as you found, less barium left, and therefore less for you to clear out. Please continue to drink that water, and I hope you start to feel normal again soon.

Keep me posted?

Thanx!

Marlo

Thanks, still clearing barium out and have increased liquids as per your advice as well by doctor I use on the AllExperts.net. He also explained the details of the test and to increase liquids and fiber. I find that that is one of the best sites for free help on a number of subjects and no registration. When I was having problems in 2002 with back and indigestion doctor there was one who advised me to see an ultrasound on gall bladder which was my problem.

Wondering for those people who have to swallow the barium for a stomach x-ray, does it have the same consistency. I'm finding while I'm moving the barium it's like moving plaster. Easily clogs up a toilet as it just is too sticky.

You may be finding the barium coming out is a lot thicker than it was going in, as your colon has absorbed some of the water suspended in it, and that results in a thicker substance coming out. The barium we give patients for the swallow is also fairly thick (think protein shake-thickness), but because the water hasn't been absorbed by your colon yet, don't worry that it would be as thick as what is coming out of you right now!

Thanks.

I received call from doctor today with the results and not as good as I had hoped. I knew I ha diverticulous from previous test but now two small polyps have shown up.

Now I have to see specialist and have a cystoscopy to have a better look and hopefully remove. Unfortunately that will probably take several weeks and I have a cruise planned for next month.

I pray everything turns out fine anyhow, just because you have polyps doesn't necessarily mean it's all bad, they could be perfectly harmless. I especially hope it doesn't interfere with the cruise!

Thanks. I see regular doctor next week but again asked doctor on the AllExperts.net. He advised that as long as they are well under 10 mm. or one centimeter cancer would not be an issue at this stage however if either are of the type that could lead to cancer then I would have to be monitored more often.

But where I am in Brantford, Ontario it will take several weeks to see a specialist and then arrange for the colonoscopy so the cruise will be first to be sure.
