Hi everyone. I was just wondering if anyone knows how many calories i need each day to keep from losing weight. I've lost 30 pounds the past few months (from avoiding food b/c so much pain) and was finally diagnosed with IBS..am just in the middle of breaking the cycle and eating enough food to maintain my weight has been somewhat hard. I try to snack all day but sometimes I forget to eat (i know, sounds crazy, huh) plus I get full REALLY quickly and when I eat past my fullness (well we all know what happens). Any suggestions...like how many calories I need. Like if I eat snacks all day (like crackers or at the most, some rice pudding, how many snacks do i need to have all day. It's just hard b/c eating too much (which isn't really a lot...just seems like it since maybe my stomach shrunk?) is a trigger for me. Maybe once I break the cycle i'll be able to incorporate more food in?

How To Calculate Your Calorie Needs

Very Light Exercise
Multiply your weight in pounds by 12

Light Exercise
Multiply your weight in pounds by 13

Moderate Exercise
Multiply your weight in pounds by 14

Moderate-Heavy Exercise
Multiply your weight in pounds by 15

Heavy Exercise
Multiply your weight in pounds by 16

Example
Alice weighs 140 pounds. She is very physically active.
Her calorie needs are 140 x 16 = 2240 calories/day

Note: All values are approximate. For a more precise definition of calorie needs, please consult the Harris Benedict Equation, which gives you a more exact Basal Energy Expenditure Level. To read more about the Harris-Benedict Formula, click: Calorie Needs for Women

Thanks Lyndeigh! That was really helfpul. I really need to boost my calorie intake ! OH well...I'm gonna try to make a banana carob high energy shake. I hope it doesn't cause my tummy any problems Anyhow...if I stay at home most of the day and then walk on the treadmill anywhere from 30 mins-60mins in all each day, would that be considered light exercise since I'm just inside most of the day? Maybe i'll consider it moderate since for me it seems like it and it wouldn't hurt to eat too many calories! Thanks so much. THat information was SO helpful. I don't feel so lost now!!!!!!!! You're the best Off I go to down some calories

You are surely welcome I too, have a major weight problem. I was always skinny (around 113 pounds at age 13) but once my IBS reared its ugly head, I lost alot. At one point, I was down to below 90 My docs all thought i was anorexic, which was, of corse, no support for me Anywho, Im now about 107 or so and try to maintain that. Tara, it sounds to me that the exercise your doing now is moderate, since its walking, but you are doing alot of it. I do absolutely NO exercise at all, so that qualifies me under light exercide, haha. Well,, sometimes in gym, they make me participate, but then i just play table tennis Let me know how the weight gain goes _

I've gotten that response before too ..and not just from docs. I don't know if i'm actually considered underweight but I've lost a lot of weight and I feel too skinny...and i know when i get sick i lose a lot of weight, so i think it would be healthier for me to at least stop losing weight I mean...i'm 17, so maybe stuff is still growing inside of me and I think losing too much weight is probably a bad thing. Well, thanks so much for the advice and support! And good luck!

Tara, it wasnt just from my docs eathier. At one point, my parents, friends and the school nurse thought i was anorexic I guess i really cant blame them that much though, because i never wanted to eat cookies, or cakes, i always wanted everything to be lowfat, i refused to eat out, (esp. fast food restaurants) I was losing weight, and my docs said that my tests showed up that everything was fine. Also, my friends noticed that i never wanted to buy lunch, or accept the gum they offered me, plus, i never wanted to go out wo meals with them, or sleep over when i knew id be eating over there. So basically, they all that that my stomach pain was caused by my so called 'anorexia' ha! I am eighteen now, so i dont feel pressured from my parents to eat things i dont want to (i can say no to eating out and they cant force me!) I hope the weight thing goes well. I find that eating frequently throughout the day and adding alot of sugar to my diet are the best things to boost up my weight

Yeah..I just started avoiding food b/c it was so painful...and yeah...friends, relatives, teachers, school people, etc. cuz i refused food too. ANd all the tests were normal. I don't like sitting at my chair at the dining room table now cause i remember all the nights i was forced to eat and knew it would hurt but just didn't wanna seem dumb. Yeah...not fun. But now , like you, I can't be forced to eat anything. I like in Heather's book how she says to think of anyone who wants you to eat something you know you shouldn't eat as a drug dealer - say no Well, thanks and i'll try to keep on eating throughout the day and add more sweets!

Hey guys! I have the same problem - My main goal right now is gaining some weight. I brought it up the other day on the boards and Heather said to see if my health food store sold AMAZAKE drinks. She said they are totally safe and you can drink as many of them in a day that you want. They have about 400 calories so I cant wait to start drinking them! I bought 2 the other night and Im on my way to go get some different flavors today. Anyways maybe this can help - they are usually by the yogurts and all that in the health food stores so take a look!

Actually that isn't accurate at all, if I went by that I would lose weight and end up underweight! I'd say the average woman needs approx. 1800 calories a day, more if you exercise a lot.

Hey Lyndeigh,

Now all i have to think about is prom

Me too. Our senior ball (i don't know why they don't just call it prom ) is in the beginning of May and I"m kinda nervous about that too! I'm really thankful I've found someone else in my boat! You're so helpful I hope your prom goes well! Hopefully there will be some safe food choices (altho...if it were my school...i think that wouldn't be likely ) but if not I guess you'll just have to break out your own snack. I'm kinda thinkin through this one, myself!!! Good luck!

Tara, no way, my prom is in the beginning of may too! lol. which is really weird considering youre in cali and im all the way across the country in New York! I dont know about your school, but mine is junk food city. For instance, we have the senior trip coming up (which im not going on) and they (the school) provides for the meals there. Well, they tell ya ahead of time: The first day, they give you pizza, soda and chips! Then, during the senior trip, they expect you to eat at mcdonalds and other fast food joints !! I am just happy that im not going on that trip. This year, proms on a this huge boat! Which means if i make any wrong choices on dinner, i'll have no wear to go, but to jump off deck!! haha. Well, last year, they gave people a choice between chicken and spaghetti- im not sure whats the options this year. Hmm...
let me know how youre prom turns out, and i'll let you know how mine does

Yep..mine too. Like soda, pizza, and cookies and candy bars are like big staples at my school. My tummy hurts thinkin about it. Plus, they have nachos but the chips are doritos, which already have all sorts of chemicals and flavors on 'em! Oh...prom on a boat. That sounds fun...but yeah...it's either the boat or overboard..lol. I missed our senior boat cruise cause I was sick Right now I'm on "home medical instruction" cause ...it's a long story but basically I've been really ugggh icky feeling since like a little b4 my bday, which was in october. But i've been on home schooling since beginning of feb. after I was in the hospital. But yeah, I'm hoping I'll gain strength along with weight so that prom will not be too hectic. Anyhow, I wish you luck on the boat! Yeah that's weird how our proms are around the same time. Mine's may eighth. It's gonna be in San Francisco. So yeah. You don't know how thankful I am for your support and stuff! Well..talk to you later! Let me know how you're feeling!

Right now I'm on spring break. Yeah my home schooling is fine..a social deprivation, but fine cause i gotta work on my own pace. The home schooling teacher only comes once a week. I just have to finish a set amount of work. I don't have to email you guys in the day I just like to talk to people who understand I'm kinda sorry I don'[t feel well enough to go to school right now, too but I'll get better And my friends visit me. Thanks for the support. I probably should've explained that to everyone so you don't think I'm weird.

Oh, no, no... please do email us during the day. I didn't think you were weird... just wondered if you went to some sort of really cool school where you had access to the internet during the day. High school has changed since I was there.

Sorry about the social deprivation... hopefully your friends are still good about getting together with you when you feel well? And hey, at least you have folks around here to gossip with during the day. Not quite the same...

And Spring Break! I forgot it was so late for high school. I am so old.

EEEk...the ER tends to not be fun Poor you! You had to be rushed there twice?! Was it in an ambulance That must have been scary! I've been to the ER twice for what I've had. Once it was at this hospital that I swear I'll never go back to (there were seriously like more security guards than nurses and stuff....and it was just not pleasant and the dr. didn't help that much..what's new..lol). The second time was at a children's hospital and that's when I got admitted. It wasn't so scary and weird there b/c everyone's all kid-friendly and the dr's and nurses like actually believed me and cared. Were both of your ER experiences icky? (well..I mean...most ER experiences r b/c who wants to be in the ER? ). ONe of the nurses at the children's hosp. was like "i bet this is so where you wanna be on a friday night." I was like "for real " I'm sorry you had to be rushed to the ER. Were they all mean and accusing you of being anorexic. If they were, that's not cool. Well...enough rambling on my part..lol. Yeah I'll be thinkin about you on May 7th Are you going with friends or a date? Well, either way, I hope you have fun!! And together we can work to incorporate more ibs foods into our diets (hopefully succesfully..lol). I think I'm gonna go try to find those Amazake drinks and I'll have to start adding more veggies and stuff in soups and stuff That's the scariest part. Oh well. I know I have a "twin" out there somewhere trying to do the same as me Thanks again and I hope you find the bread you're looking for!
P.S. You didn't have to explain that the reason you weren't eating for a while was b/c of pain. I know you're probably used to having to explain to people, as am I, but I COMPLETELY understand your reasoning! Well, hope you continue to get better! And sorry this was so long!
