Quit Caffeine: Watch what Happens

Curiously--I developed my "IBS" after slamming down 8 cups of coffee/day--for about 15 years...

Ever see what happens when you QUIT? Instant constipation!

The nerves of the colon have adjusted to that level of artificial stimulation by caffeine to produce "normal" bowel movements.

When caffeine is stopped--at least for me--the guts "lock up". It takes several weeks before "normal" defecation returns without caffeine.

And who knows--maybe the caffeine effect is not reversible in some people...And causing oversensitized gut nerves...from then on.

Maybe sol. fiber just reduces the stimulation while the nerves are "healing" from years of excessive caffeine stimulation...

But in some people...it can't be reversed? And "IBS"..results???

Nope. When I quit caffeine -- AND decaf as well -- after a FORTY-TWO year addiction, no C. (I've never had C, don't even know what it's like.) My guts never locked up.

I've been off the stuff for 4 months now. Nope, no C.

Bevrs.....I'm almost jealous of you for never having C. I know D must be horrible as well (always need a bathroom around, cramping, etc), but still...
To never have been constipated...WOW....I can't imagine how that would feel...

I drank coffee every morning for a couple years also and gave it up once I started researching IBS (about 4 weeks ago). I just just started to be "normal" in the bathroom department. I will never drink the stuff again. No More C and its wonderful!

Yes, Melissa, I feel very fortunate. My heart goes out to all you "C" people. How horrible to have it back up and not be able to get it out. That's got to be painful. I can't imagine!

While I've had many, MANY bad experiences having to go IMMEDIATELY and looking frantically for bathrooms (I have a million horror stories), I always knew I could at least hang my a-- over a log by the side of the road (hey, wait -- I remember actually doing that once!), at least I always got it out of me.

Uh-oh ..... sorry, ... I gotta GO!

I actually noticed the same thing, I'm IBS-A (both C and D) but I found that when I used to be C, if I had a mug of coffee or a few cokes I would immediately be able to do (it was like my safety net) whereas now I just have to wait patiently until my body decides it's ready, which is pretty hard. But, in the run I'm sure we're all better off without the caffeine!

Hey, I had the same thing.. even tho my coffee max was 2 cups a day so the C wasn't bad, but it was there.. I used to "poop" daily every morning after my am coffee.. no longer. I've been coffee-free for almost 2 weeks and on the IBS diet that long too, and am keeping a record of it because my body seems to be readjusting its entire pattern. I've been taking Fibercon tabs which seem to be helping. (and sent for Heather's Acacia).
