Okay, I'm confused about rice cakes...I thought they were supposed to be safe, but I had a bad reaction. It says the main ingredient is brown rice, not white...is that bad? And how about BBQ sauce??????????

no the brown rice they use to make rice cakes is totally fine for most of us. Did you get a flavoured kind???
Sometimes the ingredients in the flavoured ones contain dairy and other things that might cause an attack. So ALWAYS read the labels before buying it.
BBQ sauce should be fine in small amounts....I know there are lots of people who can handle it.
Hope this helped

Dolphin, I don't think it's the rice cakes. And BBQ sauce is safe -- I have it all the time (in fact, I just had it on my turkey burger). What else did you eat? What did you eat YESTERDAY? Did you have too MUCH? Did you have too many scoops of Mocha Fudge? Eat too many Veggie Stix? How much soy cheese did you eat? What was the total fat percentage of your meal? And yesterday too?
It's not the rice cakes.

I agree with Kimm, many rice cakes do contain dairy so if your system was sensative to start with that could be the culprit. If not, Bev's right, it might have been something from yesterday, etc. It's so hard to pinpoint what bothers you, but believe me, it gets a lot easier with time!

I'm glad I kept my food journal on that day...otherwise, I wouldn't have remembered what I ate. Okay, I think I might know the culprit....I was weak and had a bowl of my kid's Fruity Pebbles. I was just craving sugar (pms) and that was the only thing I could find. Does it sound like that could be the problem?

I was just online trying to find places to purchase some of the soy products. I went into the Health Food Portal.com and the article there said that soy can cause many problems, one is that it contains Goitrogen which depresses thyroid function. Since I am on synthroid and my doctor has just doubled my dose as it is so inactive, will the soy cause me more problems with it being underactive. Heather?

Hey! I actually cant eat rice cakes either, especially if their flavored. I dont know what it is, but everytime i try them I have a bad reaction. My stomach gets kinda crampy- you wouldnt think rice cakes would do that, but its happened every time i tried to eat them.

Patricia,
You can substitute anything soy with rice products instead….milks, cheeses, ice creams, etc. There is also almond and oat milks that are safe for you. Soy, in all forms, is something you should STAY AWAY from with hypothyroidism, and even more so if you are already on medication for it. Here is a link: Hypothyroidism . It has a wealth of info on soy and if you don't have Mary Shomon's book, you may want to consider getting it. Besides soy, you should avoid cruciferous veggies and peanut butter but all fruits are safe except for peaches and pears.
Take it from one who knows. I've been hypothyroid now for about 10 years, and yes I have a goiter. In fact I'm trying to get over a case of viral thyroiditis right now where the TSH and T-4 goes to the basement. It will take up to 2 months and in the meantime you get nasty symptoms….not fun .
You may email me at anytime if you have more questions. Kandee
